Removing Transfer Box from vehicle

Morning
I have am in the process of building up an Ashcroft Transfer
Box. Due to a lack of engine crane, and funds for a clutch etc,
I am thinking of swapping the Transfer Box only, in situ.
Any tips for this? My 88 is a late one with a non removeable
cross member.

I have recently done the exact same job. I removed the seat box
& floors ( I have no idea if you can get the transfer box off on
its own without doing this). Once they were out it is pretty
straight forward and you can lift it in and out on your own.
Usual stuff - remove transmission brake to pull the intermediate
gear pin - remove bottom cover first so you can pop the gear
out. Then there are 3 nuts internally to the transfer box that
you can only get at to remove once the inter gear is out - you
may already know all this?
Assume you have a manual to read up but all do-able quite easily
on your own.

You need to drain oil from main gearbox as well , there is a
couple of holes to allow removal of layshaft bearing which are
sealed by transfer case and the oil will leak out if not
drained.

Many thanks for the replies, I was hoping not to remove the
seatbox, though I know this will make the job quicker.
EDD, I may well take you up on the Engine Crane at some point!

Yes, you can do it without removing the seatbox - or at least, I
didn't remove the seatbox when I replaced my transfer box.
It is a bit of a squeeze and a little bit awkward, but I don't
remember any real snags.
I don't remember draining the gearbox, and don't remember any
leaks :-?

Depends how level the ground is that you're working on, working
with the front pointing uphill = oil dribbling out thegearbox
through the whole in the oil seal

I 'think' the two holes (and potential leaks) that the earlier
poster refers to may well be ones drilled by some previous owner
who has taken the gearbox to pieces. One of the 'alternative'
ways to removing the outer ring on the rear layshaft bearing is
to drill two holes at exactly the right location and use a thin
drift to tap it out (there are other methods!). My experience of
rebuilding gearboxes is limited to non-synchro ones so normally
these holes do not exist (unless the later boxes have them???).
I guess that would explain why you experienced no leaks. One of
my boxes had had the holes drilled by someone (certainly not
'official' judging by the state of them) and sealing them was
interesting as one was just on the edge of where the gasket
fitted!!
Back to the OP's question - Personally I would pull the seat box
(you will probably have to do it one day anyway) and depending
on how rusted the bolts are it is only about an hours job (might
be less with the grinder!) - makes life easier in the end. Also
well greased (new?) bolts going back in will mean next time it
will be a piece of cake!!

I have stripped 4 series 3 gearboxes and rebuilt three of them
over the last 3 years and all have had the holes for removing
layshaft outer bearing.
Series 2 boxes may not have them but as OP has a late series 3
doubt very much that they will not be there.
Gearbox main case overhaul section in official manual even
mentions the two holes in the manual.37.12.43 section 7.
PDF no4 page 25.

...indeed.
And that explains why I have never seen them as a 'factory'
modification - all my boxes are too old :thumbs:
