Maybe I'm just getting old ?
By: PennLandy Date: October 20, 2014, 1:30 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Ive owned my series 3 for just over a year now and got it from
no MOT and running badly to fully legal and running nicely all
with zero mechanical knowledge or skill and a lot of manual
reading. When i first got her i had a real interest in
offroading and pushing the landy to her limits, i was fascinated
with how far you could still push leaf springs and prove how
good they can be. I finally got round to attending my first pay
and play the other day and was full of excitement, when i got
there i quickly realised i was surrounded by HUGE discoverys and
various what i can only presume was MOT failed Jap 4x4s. The
idea of the day seemed to be push your car hard with no
consideration given to how much damage you could/would do to the
car. After only one hour (half of which i just watched) i left
feeling slightly gutted about the whole thing. What i have
realised though is actually my passion lies in the restoration,
the looking after, the maintaining of what in my opinion is an
important part of British history. Id still love to green lane,
offroading with a point and a destination still appeals but not
just to damage the car and surroundings. Ive now booked my S3 in
for a galvanised chassis and hope to keep her as original as
possible (whilst making her that little bit more drivable) and
enjoy a bit of touring in her. She might not be fancy and she
might not be valuable, but she's original and i plan on keeping
her as near to that as i can.
Sorry its a long post i just wondered if anybody else had felt
the same ?

I've been to a few pay and plays and any reckless driving is
frowned upon. It should be about skill and getting around with
NO damage. There are a few pikey dicks around which gives off
roading a bad name.
I would never risk my 101 off roading but love to see what it
can do.

Don't get me wrong it was well ran and everyone was friendly it
just became apparent that for a lot of people damage was just
part of the day, still keen to see what mine can do just much
more interested in doing it in the process of getting from A to
B across an interesting route rather than just up and down bomb
holes

Have you considered RTV trials with an AWDC affiliated club?
To me there seems to be far more purpose to it, the object is to
get around a specific course without getting stuck, stopping or
hitting the canes, your competing within class against similar
vehicles, and everyone takes there turn so you get to watch
other vehicles performing
At most clubs there's generally a few series vehicles all of
which have to be road legal and close to the standard spec.
It's meant to be non damaging, but if you walk a section and
don't fancy driving it that's your choice.

i think i'm with you on this :-?
i much prefer a good green lane day - but i do enjoy it more
when they are a bit technical and i really have to think about
getting the 'right line' so not to get stuck or damage anything
cant say i get it right all the time - but i can never blame my
landrover - its always down to my 'lack of talent' :haha:
it is better with other series vehicles - i find you all are
like minded and work with what you've got :smilewide:

However, I just love taking the Hybrid out on our lanes and just
enjoy the day...

Def want to get some decent green laneing done and with other
series would make it even better ! Unfortunately i live in a
particularly bad area for green lanes. Family up in the lakes
though so hopefully head up there some point soon, fingers
crossed my old 2.25 petrol could hack the 5 hours drive at 60mph
!!

MMM exactly my thinking too... we have 'KORK off roading'
the old quarry at Kirton in Lindsey near where I lives and it
operates a P&Play.. however most seem to be there to just
totally 'abuse to destruction' our lass bought me a 'day pass'
for my birthday almost a year ago and TBH its still not used as
im not really sure its my kind of fun in the LR.. much prefer
tootling around the local lanes and trogging across any
unguarded field I come across

I've done bits and bobs of stuff in the UK and I'm of the
opinion the reason people tend to behave like bellends on pay
and play sites is boredom. You're not actually going anywhere,
just driving round in circles for the "fun" of it.
I like going places off road. The trouble is that's not easy
(read impossible) in the UK to cover any decent distance. I do
all of my exploring stateside in the ambulance where breaking
anything has serious financial and potentially
health-threatening consequences. Driving with vehicle
preservation top of the list is paramount to me. Snapping half
shafts in a mud pit for the sake of it is for :wanker: .

the different "Series" groups/fans/forums/clubs generally have
weekends away greenlaning and camping
most of my unsurfaced driving is done in Wales on long weekends
with local members of the Series2 Club where we watch and help
each other to minimise the risk of damage and in doing so get
plenty of opportunity to learn what our motors and ourselves are
capable of, we have had a few relative novices in our group who
have come out with us and learnt what thier vehicles and they
are capable of with thier confidence growing each time
being long weekends (4 days with 2 days laning and 2 days
travelling) it also gives us a good excuse for fires, alcohol
and meat along with the odd roadside repair, no more than 3
halfshafts in the last 4 years from the core group of 7 vehicles
(apart from 1 early gearbox failure before leaving the midlands
and one 4.203 deciding to go into runaway mode), the last
weekend saw 14 vehicles gathered and ZERO breakdowns with a
minimum mileage of 420miles and one chap (Oddjob) exceeding 600
miles (ok my clutch played up but i completed the weekend
without too much difficulty)
also being Series Only weekends any problems that do crop up we
can generally deal with amongst ourselves
i have also been greenlaning with the local Mudclub members a
couple of times (all manner of boingy things generally on 1 day
outings) and whilst it was still enjoyed i do prefer the Series
Only weekends which have vehicles ranging from scruffy but
historically interesting to the odd "show level" restorations in
our outings, of course we have the bitsas as well
this forum along with others between them have enough
outings/events to keep you out there for a really big part of
the year if you can get to them, all you need to do is keep your
eyes open, i think i already have at least 5 in my diary for
next year, 3 trips to Wales, LaT'P and Banbury Rally
(steam/vintage vehicle show) and possibly another Sibbertoft
Dirty Weekend (PnP plus laning) if it doesn't clash with another
event, ok only 3 of them are laning trips but the socialising is
a really big part of it for me
i've also been on 1 PnP with "bellends in d*scos" and watched
them gleefully wreck them, that's not for me
