transfer box noised

Hi I have got a problem with my transfer box I think in high
range it is really noisy a harsh wining sound if Iput it in low
range it is much quieter by comparison is it possible to remove
the transfer box without removing the gear box I will pull the
pan off of it tomorrow and have a look inside any info would be
great thanks Bob

They are usually much noisier in low range as that's a straight
cut gear, so doesn't sound good
I'm told you can take the transfer box off in situe. Not sure I
would though, I would rather to take the box out

Has it got oil in ? Has the main gearbox oil migrated into it
and overfilled it ?

any obvious sign of oil leaks from the drum of hand brake?
the previous box did split the circlip that locates between the
front output bearing and thrust for high gear wheel in the
transfer case and caused lot of play i did imediately stop the
landy for repairs i did all with it in place the two times.
speedo housing and bottom plate had to come off and it was a
squeeze. first fix lasted few months the second circlip lasted
longer
could it be work bearings? at high speeds spinning at higher
rpm. and at lower speed spinning at lower rpms.
my thoughts.

I checked the wheel bearings yesterday when changed the diff as
Ithought that was the problem originally it has got oil in
it,is the excess play in the gears easy to see if the circlip
has broken?

Transfer box can come off without gearbox out , need rear brake
drum and backplate stripping off to get intermediate shaft out.
You still need to drain the gear box oil as there is a hole in
back of case which is sealed by the transfer case.
Whilst you have got the bottom plate off check the intermediate
gears for excess movement on the shaft .
In high ratio output shaft is turning much faster so if bearings
have worn would be much noiser.

Removed the plate today found s few small knicks on the hi ratio
intermediate and out put gears but nothing much no lumps of
swarfe floating around either but found a mark on the back face
of the intermediate gear which corresponds with a stud
protruding too far so removed the stud and trimmed it down a bit
I just need to get some new shims now for the thrust washers as
the endfloat seemed a bit excessive I'm guessing that wear on
the thrusts has allowed the Intermediate gear to touch the stud
which looks like it was too long at least it was longer than the
others in that part of the transfer box does any one have the
correct endfloat figures
