Nice looking motor. Has it standard gearing or has it been
changed?

I I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but TBH a V8 is the
only way that I would go with a series one.
I do like the very functional basic styling, but I'm really not
interested in rebuilding some ancient engine with extortionately
priced parts.
In fact, if you aren't keeping it bog standard, why not go the
whole hog with an EFi 4.0 ???

Sadly I'd love a V8 but the cost of running it daily will kill
me

I think you'd be surprised at the sort of milage you can expect
from a fuel injected V8.
In a monster Range Rover with an auto box and power everything
it's certainly pretty grim.
But in a SWB leafer weighing probably 3/4 of a ton less, you're
probably looking at 25 mpg on out of town work.
Yes that's way better than you'll ever get from a two and a
quarter petrol, of course the gearing needs to be altered to
suit the abundance of torque.
Obviously if you cruise everywhere at motorway speeds in a
vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick, you're going to pay
for it.
And big petrol engines are real guzzlers on real short journeys
and sitting stuck in traffic jams, so if that's your lot, buy a
diesel.
