mot history / testing

righty..
getting nearer an MOTable landy now :)
now.. I have a conunrum.. Where to get it tested....
Through an unfortunate chain of events, Short version of which
is I took it to a garage for some welding work & an MOT, they
ran a mile from the welding work & took it to another unknown
garage for its test where it gained a spectacular fail sheet.
I have since gone through his failure list issued to me &
have/will have everything listed corrected. Just for
completeness on the MOT history Should i go back to the mot
station that failed it? that way they cant justifiably go
finding any more faults with it that were no on the first fail
sheet & it would look like remedial work has been done properly
on the history.
Or should i take it to my usual friendly mot place ( not
dodgy/pass it all, just a trusted garage )

There's no advantage taking it back to the garage who failed it
unless it's eligible for a reduced price partial re-test.
Otherwise you'll get a full test and they can legitimately fail
it for anything that's wrong.
I've been taking mine to one of two Halfrauds autocentres for
the last couple of years as they often do half price tests.
Currently class IV is £29.95.

HTML http://www.halfordsautocentres.com/mot.
On the whole they've
been prefectly acceptable and not failed me for anything silly,
other than the 101 a couple of years back when the regular
tester was on holiday and some idiot who had no idea how to
brake test the 101 got confused.
It's important to know your stuff and hang around while it's
being tested, the lad at my local Halfords is a very fair tester
but until he did a couple of my series motors wasn't familiar
with them. Pointing out the chassis plate and explaining the
controls and switchgear is always appreciated in my experience.

I'm a big fan of find a local small MOT station who you know you
can trust and take all your vehicles to the same man every time.
The big plus is that it's always the same bloke testing it.
Something you don't get at a large outfit.
As long as you have found one you trust to be fair.
My tester loves to see my Landy every year. It only takes him
about 15 minutes to test it, then we drink tea until the MOT
computer thinks the allocated time is up and lets you enter a
pass.

As above, crucial to find an old fashioned small place that's
'old vehicle friendly' ;-)

righty o I think i will go back to my usual place then.
I just don't want it to look on the paperwork that I gained a
pass by simply finding a "fairer"garage ( or indeed if its
anything that people look for )
Cheers

Find that fairer garage... no one's goin to analyse anything,
who would bother, unless there was a blatant bent mot racket
going on , you just want a ticket and an easy life (
presumably!)

the place I use isn't the nearest, and they don't discount the
price to get work, but the testers are "older" and look after a
few classics.

I've got to disagree with a number of the postings above. The
MOT test should be carried out to the same standard regardless
of where you go. Familiarity of the vehicle helps of course, but
isn't essential. Perhaps the training has improved in the last
decade or so, but as I've said I've found testers quite sensible
wherever I've gone in recent years.
Don't knock the savings to be had from the big boys either,
taking four a year for test on average gets expensive. Catching
the Halfords half price deal = £109 saving, that pays for the
insurance on more than one of them. And I come out with exactly
the same piece of paper it's allegedly 'crucial' to go to a
'fairer' garage for... :rolleye0012: :smilewide:

Well my local guy "trusts" me to fix something.
Last time a side light was not working. Many testers would
simply fail it. My garage passed it on the understanding I fix
it promptly.
Yes you could fix it and present for a re test anywhere else,
but he saved me the bother. and yes I did fix it.

In holland i was under my vehicles during the mot's. They got
checked much harder then should.... I like it that way. In the
uk it is harder to be allowed near the truck during the mot,
unless there is a auto clutch fitted and a left foot
accelerator.
I need to find a iphone app with mot rules, rules on importing a
1965 diesel etc :) no seatbelts or window washer jets fitted
from new.
