Mounting a Hi-Lift

I have a 4' Hi-Lift (a genuine one not Chinese shite)
Which I'm thinking about mounting externally on the vehicle
(1970 88")
First thoughts were across the rear of the bonnet between the
spare wheel and the bulkhead, but I'm sorry to say that there
just ain't enough room.
The obvious place where the boingy brigade seem to mount theirs
is the NSR corner, fixed to the rear crossmember and hardtop
roof panel.
That would be fine at the moment, but next year (as funds
permit) I'm going to a full soft top.
I'm thinking that having the Hi-Lift there would stop me from
rolling up the canvass properly.
So other ideas I've got are across the top of the front bumper.
OK until I want to mount a winch there.
How about along the top of one of the wings, or even across the
front edge of the bonnet ???
These latter two positions might prove somewhat, err, user
unfriendly, to any pedestrians that I might collide with.
As far as I'm concerned it would serve the fuckers right for
getting in my way.
I doubt if Plod and my insurers would see it that way.
So I'm not sure really where the Hell I can mount the fucker.
Any clever and innovative suggestions would be appreciated.

Horizontally along the side of the tub ? Not sure if Plod would
approve if you tangled with pedestrians on the High Street.

Pretty damn sure it would tangle with stuff off road.
TBH I'd never do anything that increased the width of the
vehicle.
Would seem to be a good way to rip the side off the tub at some
point maybe ???
Thanks for the suggestion anyway, but I think that would be
potentially more deadly than across the front of the bonnet
even.

If you can zoom in on the not very clear pic below, this is
where I kept mine.
Hard to explain, but here goes:
I removed my grab handles from the rear Xmember and replaced
them with two 6" lengths of box section, about 40mm if I
remember correctly.
The foot sat on the box section, and was held in place by a
shorter section of box, welded to a plate around 3" square, with
about an inch of threaded bar sticking out, that would pass
through a hole in the rack, and could be held in place by a nut,
this plate when in the right position, was drilled and then
bolted through the rear corner panel.
I carried an adjustable wrench, so the nut could be tightened
sufficiently, to stop someone casually walking off with the
jack.
(A small leather dog collar with a buckle, passed through a hole
in the rack near the top was used to keep the handle upright.

Leaving it on the outside means it's vulnerable to theft. Your
choice.

the threaded bar I used to use with a nut, could easily be
adapted to use a padlock.

No issues with it fouling the soft top then ???
As for it being venerable to theft, well if I'm going to a full
soft top it would be just as vulnerable inside the vehicle
wouldn't it ???
I find that a big fuck off padlock and chain is usually a good
visual deterrent to thieving scum.
Years ago some bunch of cunts got into my old series two soft
top by burning through the nylon rope holding down the rear flap
of the canvas.
Used a cigarette lighter by the looks of it, because they were
too thick to work out how to untie the rope.
They were also too thick to realise that we would quickly work
out just who the culprits were ( my mates scumbag neighbours )
They had a lot of trouble with people damaging their cars after
that.

Or circumcise it a couple of inches (you won't miss them trust
me) and mount it along the wheel arch in the tub. At right
angles to Pauls. It'll be out of the way and out of sight.

I only take mine if I think I'll need it which isn't very often.
When I do, I put it where HHH has his and the seats stop it
rumbling about. Wouldn't have with me for normal Land Rover use
and certainly not sticking to the outside anymore than I would
have a spade strapped to my tailgate. That's for dafties.
