cluth issues. Advice and suggestions please.

Recently purchased my s3 lwb diesel, with a gearbox issue I
thought I had solved but I haven't. being a little out of
practice I cant decide what my next course of action should be
so im looking for suggeastiong please.
basically clutch does not work. If I start it put it in gear
with clutch down and out of drive with the transfer box then put
it into drive on the transfer box I can control the truck. but
if I try and start it in gear with pedal down it just judders
forward like i've left it in gear. I had to change the slave
because the old one had cracked. its had a new master cylinder
and pipework but Ive put a second hand slave. system appears to
be bled with no obvious air issues although I did see fluid
around the piping and the flexi.
looking through the inspection plate on top of the gearbox you
can see the thrust moving onto the pressure plate.
do you think its the second hand slave or is the clutch simply
       worn and need replacing.
its a 2.2.5 diesel which seems ok. so should I just fix the
clutch issue or just put my 2.5 in it

Spend a fiver and replace the flexi, bleed again and report
back. Try gravity bleeding the series three is not the best to
       bleed easily.

As said replace the flexi, also worth looking carefully at the
ridged pipe where it passes behind the engine, with engine
movement there is always potential for them to rub through.
If still struggling You could always unbolt the slave cylinder
(but leave pipe connected) and bolt a plate and suitable bolt
over the end so it has something solid to push against this way
you can test it easier as you can feel if the pedal is loosing
pressure when held on and it also may reveal any leaks.
Either way you want to be 100% sure your hydraulics are OK
       before delving any deeper.

you say that you can see the thrust bearing moving foward &
engaging the clutch.. this would suggest to me that maybe the
clutch disk has bonded to the flywheel
There are a few ways of breaking them apart, all of which
involve inducing a shock down the transmission.

:lightblb: I think you have hit the nail on the head, I was
assuming the clutch had been working but had stopped, if it has
been sat for a while this is most likely.

A silly one, series threes have a shim plate the same shape as
the slave cylinder flange. These are sometimes missing and can
give problems on push rod movement. Has as suggested the motor
been standing for a while ?

Divie if the shim plate was in place surely that would give less
travel on the pushrod to the fork.
Quite certain there is no shim plate on mine without any issue.
Have you got the free play set up correctly at the master
       cylinder?
Clutch pedal should have about 1/4" of travel before it moves
       the master cylinder.

thanks so far everyone. Ill try my best to answer these
       suggestions
1- it id have a shim on it but i removed it to try and give me a
       few mm more movement.
2- not sure on the travel on the master as it was fitted before
       i had it.
3- has been standing but not for very long tax only ran out end
       of august.
4- no obvious leaking from the piping
I have driven it a short distance with a sort of clutch you get
when its low on fluid (barely there) bt enough for me to park
it. it feels as if its riding not quite on not quite off. in my
opinion it just needs to push that fork a little further.
when looking through the inspection cover the pressure plate
goes flat when thrust is applied is this correct or should it
       push it inward?

but more info and again thanks for the advice.
I have popped up this evening as it was getting dark, looked
again throug the inspection hole everything appears to be
working. I depressed the clutch pedal and managed to get a bar
into the inspection hole behind the clutch fork and there is no
more movement forward so the slave appears to be doing its job
       and its on full reach.
so im leaning toward a clutch fault. it has been standing but I
never asked for how long, I just assumed only a few weeks as
the tax ran out end of august.
if you crank it over in gear with pedal depressed it will turn
over very slowly and tries to move. but obviously if i crank it
without pedal depressed it lurches forward.
       suggestions
