Annoying vibrating/fine tapping - hotspots?
By: Gozo_Joseph Date: October 5, 2014, 4:29 am

Hello there.
the engine has developed an annoying/irritating rattle/very fine
tap at slighlty above idle speed and when engine is piling revs
upon gear changes. when under load it disappears. on start up it
is not there. I am sure it must be something that is vibrating a
bit. the land rover is slightly smokey but i guess that is
normal for a diesel of the 1970s period. i dont think it is
gearbox or drive train related as when i do coasting with engine
off i don't hear it.
any pointers?
could it be a hotspot going loose? or if these fail they fail in
a sudden way?
was thinkering of checking injectors by undoing the union
slightly and see if engine noise changes?
Would it be possible that the distributor pump is worn? if i am
not mistaken it was rebuilt a good few years back. not sure if
2010 or earlier.

I had a similar thing many years ago, on my S3, it turned out to
simply be the exhaust mainfild blowing, causing a
'ticking/tapping'.
Worth a look maybe?

Hello Joe
I had similar too I thought it could be allsorts wrong from
tappets to loose bolts and timing chain Turned out to be blown
exhaust gasket and manifold to downpipe needed tightening

If it turns out not to be the exhaust, assume you've checked the
tappets recently ?

I had a hot spot break up and do loads of damage, the only
symptoms prior to failing where.
1) A slight misfire on tick over.
2) The odd puff of smoke on tick over.
The engine ran and pulled well.

I have a noise like that it starts exactly at 60MPH and its the
interior mirror vibrating on the ball that itb adjusts on.
I thought it was in the dash top but a mate was in with me a
couple of months back and found it straight away.
My transfer lever was rattling so fitted a new one with a
tighter bottom pivot great for two days now rattles worse than
my original.

hi cant pull myself together to check it out.
What i notice dis that it does not start right away upon start
up. only noticeable when warm up to hot running temps.
i tried coasting with engine turned out to see if it appears but
well no sign of it so not in gearbox.
i also managed to sort a pinhole in the tail pipe and tighten
the rear end a bit. will check again some time soon if weather
clears. and dries
