i have one in mine and like it :-?
but the opinion out there is they are unreliable and useless -
if you get a good one and look after it - they are good
very regular oil changes are needed - they need to be well
cooled - they die in a big way when they go :rolleye0012:

does the front pipe fit the series or whole 90 job required
by regular oil change how often?
was thinkin in me swb series 2 sherpa oil cooler and keep orig

Hi don't know if this is of any help but some years ago I went
through a south African land rover owner forum and there was a
guy building a camper conversion based on a lwb and he used the
2.5 turbo and highlighted three manufacturing/engineering issues
that cure the over heating of the said engine. i think all had
to do with widening some port/water way in it. but not sure ..
sadly i did not take note of it as i don't run such engines
maybe you can google it?

exhaust needs to be bigger than normal series so 90 , 110 ,disco
? parts are ideal
you can get one made up in stainless - but pricey
my standard s3 rad copes but just - i am working on a disco rad
conversion and intercooler as i managed to find a e-bay rare 19j
intercooler conversion
i find them quieter than a 200tdi - but they are not as revvy -
good low down torque but not revvy
oil changes every six months - just to be on the safe side
if (when) it blows up keep the turbo and manifold - it can be
used to fit a 200tdi disco motor and makes it fit better

I have owned two motors fitted with 19j engines.
The first was a 1968 series 2a the engine gear box and
transfer box being from an early 90. This was great, until it
over heated blowing the head. Cost a fortune to rebuild the
engine, had TD i's been available at the time I would have
replaced the 19 j. That said, it did excellent service after
the rebuild with good power and economy.
The second one was a K plate series three where the 19 j
replaced a knackered and badly fitted TD I.
An absolute bastard of a job, but eventually ran ok coupled to
the series box. Only kept that one for a couple of weeks before
reverting to an ex mil series 2.

Good engines if you apply a bit of basic common sense to running
one, I have one with a Td5 intercooler for head preservation
duties. Very cheap to obtain and easy to install, keeps the
character of a series with a bit more power for modern traffic.

how does an intercooler help the head keep preserved? isnt the
job of the intercooler to cool down air at inlet so that you can
introduce more air in? or my knowledge is wrong??
This chat about the 19J engine :) a local friend who converted
his 2.5td 90 into td5 power had some second thoughts about
getting such engine. he told me that 200tdi is far better but
then again he is from the land of 5 speed heavier duty boxes not
for the old and ageing series boxes. There is a local boinger
going at reasonable money with such 19J engine and i am very
tempted - vintage wise it is close to the series era.
