Pitted Swivel Balls

Advice please!
Would you consider the amount of pitting on these bad enough to
consign them to scrap, or would they be ok to re-use (and
possibly leak a bit more)?
The rest of the area not shown in the photos is fine.
If I do need to get replacements, where can I get decent quality
ones from?

They do look a bit tardy. Try a wire brush and degrease then
fill with Araldite regular not the quick set stuff.
Leave a minimum of 24 hours to harden then gently sand back, new
seals and one shot lube will see them last a while. Got four
years out of mine and no signs of leaks yet. :rolleye0012:

I know somebody who painted theirs with smoothrite and rebuilt
them and they where still OK 3 years later, he did use 50% one
shot 50% ep90 in them, I have always wondered how well galv
would hold up, you would have to smooth the surface first.

Not really answering your question.
But if you go on Paddocks site, I think they're selling some
"rubber gaiter" kits for
the swivel housings.
Now if they happen to be oil tight, then you don't need to fit
an oil seal on your swivel housings.
That's only an assumption on my part.
But I can't think of any other reason why folk would pay £28 +
VAT unless it guaranteed a MOT pass.

If you fill them with 'One-Shot', they don't leak anyway. One of
mine is much worse than that and is fine.

I'm sure that's not true.
Surely some Blue Box stuff will fail before you get as far as
the MOT centre 8)

I think it's worth having a go at reducing the pitting and using
one shot grease. There are some choices for new ones, starting
at £120+vat each for genuine and working down. Shitpart OEM is
usually OK, but it's hard to be sure what you're getting if it's
unbranded. MoD type leather gaiters I'm a fan of, Shitpart
bought Bailcast who came up with the rubbery ones and they're
supposed to be OK but more expensive and I have no first hand
experience with them.

...chemical metal works pretty well in place of araldite....and
it smooths down nicely too :thumbs:
