Restoring a steering wheel

Possibly on the wrong forums for this.
I want to restore my late IIA steering wheel to its former
glory.
Being off the vehicle and chucked in the garden for three months
hasn't improved it any.
About 75% of the rim is now exposed bakelite and IIRC the next
stage of deterioration is when the bakelite starts to decompose
and comes off on your hands all the time.
I vaguely remember the product "Plastikote" being suggested for
this task.
I've no idea if it's any good.
I'm open to any suggestions on what to use.
Also do I need to completely remove all the old coating before
applying anything else, or can I just got away with flatting it
down ???
I'm planning on doing a lot of miles in the vehicle over the
next few years, so I need to find something tough and durable,
even if it costs a bit.

Memory fades a bit with age, not sure if "Frost's" restoration
products do this stuff. I did see an advert in a mag a long time
ago for a company who did these wheels.

Did mine a few years back, ground out the cracks filled them
with body filler sanded smooth and used pasticote.
The paint wore though after a while and the cracks came back.
Decided that the best thing was this

Looks a bit like the old bently bluemels steering wheel, used
black para cord so as not to show the dirt.

Donkeys years ago, when I first put my old series two back on
the road, I tried painting the bakelite rim of the wire spoked
wheel.
Not durable enough, as you say.
Then I went to a laced on leather cover.
Much better, but not good if you keep jumping into the vehicle
with oily dirty hands.
Needed to wash your hands every time you got out.
Went to a S3 box and wheel in the end.
Not looked at Frosts yet.
Gotta be worth a try
Just wondering how well the stuff will last in the real world,
not on some Sunday only job.

Filled the cracks in mine with epoxy glue, sanded them then
painted with 2 pack paint , has lasted well for over 3 years.

Leather cover, sewed on. Simple as fuck. Job done.

The coating on the steering wheel on the Dennis comes off on
your hands, I am currently just putting up with it although
sorting it is on the massive "to do" list.
Was reccomended to try the kit but seems overly expensive..
might just paint it.

I filled the holes with araldite. I also coated any bare patches
as well; mine had been sat outside in sun and rain for a long
time too.
Sanded back and did a high build primer and a few coats of gloss
black. 4 th I've done like this- found the gloss last a lot
longer; yet to have mucky hands afterwards.

Same as above I used araldite which is possible to sand to some
degree once it has set, I Used a rattle can black gloss enamel
on top, plan B is to make a leather cover if it starts to wear.
Plasticote used to be the dog bollocks for plastic stuff but it
is now totally shite thanks to regulations, hence why most
places have stopped selling it.
