Fuel pump primer lever

Series 3 2.25 petrol.
Normally starts instantly.
but when left for a month or more, it takes a lot of cranking
before it fires. sometime so much that the battery dies (yes I
probably want a new battery)
I have always assumed all this cranking was to pump some fuel
through because it had drained or evaporated.
So this time I opened the bonnet, found the fuel pump and pumped
what looked to me like a priming lever for about a minute.
And it STILL ran my battery flat before she fired.
Is this a priming lever? if so why did it not work? Or what
else makes it reluctant to start after a long period being idle
(but otherwise starts instantly)

Disconnect the fuel pipe at the carb and try pumping the primer
and see if you have fuel at the carb.
Check filter, sediment pot and worth blowing fuel lines through.
Check pump diaphragm is ok and consider fitting a non return
valve.

Mine used to do it until i replaced the plugs/leads/rotor
arm/cap etc etc, i imagine it was moisture build up preventing a
good spark.

I'd suggest you crack off the fuel pipe at the carb and pump the
manual priming lever to see if it's working as wavey says. After
being stood for a month I'd favour fuel starvation as the most
likely cause, and perhaps something is stopping the fuel from
being drawn through by the pump when everything is dry.
If you have twin tanks and a changeover tap military style then
the cork seal in that tap would be prime suspect. It could be a
weak pump or perhaps something not right with the pipework. It's
worth pulling the pick up pipe out of the tank and checking that
is clear, I fannyed around with the left hooker 109 for ages not
that long ago only to find the pick up pipe had blocked itself
solid with crap after being stood.
The fuel pump and tank connections are 1/4" BSP, if the pipes
look dodgy I tend to get some 5/16" hosetails to fit 1/4" BSP
threads and use standard 5/16" rubber fuel hose rather than that
factory hard stuff.

Depends where the engine stopped if on a high spot of cam
priming pump will do nothing.
Did not think petrols had the priming pump.
Didt he lever fell like it gained any resitance after pumping if
not flick starter to tutrn cam to a different position and try
again.

Yeah, they do have a priming lever. At least the AC glass bowl
original type do, not too sure about all the recent
replacements.

I'll have to investigate further.
When I tried pumping the priming lever it felt like it was doing
nothing, no resistance at all.
Perhaps next time I try, if I get no resistance again, I'll get
the starting handle out and crank the engine 180 degrees and try
again.

Did you have the fuel pipe disconnected at the carb? If not, and
the carb was already full of fuel you won't feel any resistance.

If the carb was full of fuel why didn't it start?

I had a similar problem today. Tried to start a "future project"
(read:eBay impulse purchase) I hadn't run for a few months, it's
an Early s3 2.25 petrol, bugger won't fire, no fuel getting to
carb, enough in the tank to draw up, took the glass bowl out,
gave it a clean (there was plenty of sediment in the bottom)
then primed the pump (all the 2.25 petrols I have known have
priming levers), all good, fuel came pissing out the pipe!
I'm none the wiser as to why it would fail to draw fuel to carb,
airlock in the pump maybe?
