Back when scrap was worthless I was buying off eBay for sub-£200
to £400, and that was only 10 years ago. In some ways it's
better they're fetching more now, when the price of scrap went
through the roof I'm sure a number of old series went that way -
it wasn't worth the agro when they fetched £15 weighed in so
they sat around quietly rusting. I am shocked how much some
things are fetching, "classic" vehicles seem to be drifting
generally upwards regardless of what they are. A series must be
worth a million quid if people are silly enough to pay £10k for
a bag'o'shite mk3 Escort.

I used to break series 2 / 3 ten years ago, I broke up at least
thirty, and never paid more that £200 for any of them, and most
were a nominal amount. I took a photo of each one before I broke
it and looking back now through them it is a crying shame really
what I did to them. I used to pull the overdrives out, and any
small odds and ends and then cut them up and weighed them in.
Amongst them was a 1983 109 Carmichael fire tender - had the FC
rims off it, seat box and scrapped the rest, a lovely 1972
completely original marine blue series 3 88" - put a diahatsu
diesel in that one and completely ruined it, bulkhead was
perfect as well but who wanted series 3 bulkheads then?. I once
paid twenty quid for a 1984 109 FFR with all the gear - my
friends thought I was mad to buy it. The engine was the best
I've ever heard as it was rebuilt in 1997 just before demob and
it still lives on in my lightweight.
Anyway enough of my rambling, at least I kept the series 2a
lightweight and my 80"!

Going OT just a touch, but I saw some photos on another forum
of a wrecking yard in the US, before and after the scrap price
went silly a few years back.
"Windy Hill" New London MN.
I can't really believe the figure, but apparently three square
miles of the yard was cleared
Nearly all the cars taken were pre war, most seemed to be from
the "Bonnie and Clyde" era.
Only about 1% were spared, the rest have been melted down in
China by now.
Tragic
If leafer prices climb well clear of scrap weight value, they
won't get melted down.
That's got to be a good thing.

nothing to do with this thread in particular, but I'm quiering
the assumption that the tax exemption is now a 'rolling year'
enactment, kind regards :

Yep, it was moved forward by one year two budgets ago, and made
40 year rolling in the last budget. If you a do a search on here
there's a thread that links to the relevant blurb on the
Government's website.

Well I'm going to view a petrol 88 tomorrow evening. Definetly
needs a chassis an a fair bit of other bits. But it's a 1975 I
think and is gonna cost the grand total of £550 delivered :)

With a little bit of luck it will become tax exempt in two years
time.
And if it really does turn into mission impossible, you can
claw back your money by breaking it and selling all the bits.

Congratulations on your purchase
I suspect that you are now at the bottom of what is going to
become quite a steep learning curve.
It will either break you or make you.
Enjoy!
