What should I pay?
By: Kingfisher8 Date: September 6, 2014, 7:58 am

Afternoon.
Having just sold my bike I now have the funds to buy my series
3 :)
But, what sort of money should I be looking at paying? Ideally I
want an 88 petrol. But don't mind a 109. I'm looking for a
project, will be putting Galv chassis and bulkhead on but Would
like panels to be decent. What do you guys think I should be
paying?
There is a nice blue, tax exempt one on that well know auction
site, but without engine. But it's sitting at £860 ATM.
Cheers in advance, I don't want to over pay or appear like cunt
by offering too little.

If you are going to the expense and effort you say,the world is
pretty much your oyster. There are some mechanically sound
basket cases around for less than a grand.
Good body panels /engine / gearbox /axles is all that matters I
guess.
You will,I imagine , refurb as you go.
Good hunting bud! :smilewide:

Take your time and get an abandoned project.
The more money that has been sunk into it the bigger bargain you
will get.
And if someone else's dream isn't exactly your cup of tea, sell
off the bits you don't like on eBlag.

So under a grand for a half decent project?

If the chassis is a basketcase then a straight series 3 is
do-able under a grand and 109s are usually cheaper than 88s,
station wagons excepted. A good, straight, original, rusty non
plate-raped series 2 from 58-61 on the other hand I'd expect to
fetch more than that as even after the expense of a new galv
chassis and bulkhead it's sale value is much more when
completed.
There are some bargains to be had with abandoned projects as FJ
says and patience can pay off. As Christmas approaches the
prices may drop off a bit, people seem not to want to be
tinkering with projects in the winter (understandably) and a lot
of people are borasic. The week before Christmas stuff can go
silly cheap.
It's a difficult call but having owned most varieties of series
motors if I were to have one only I'd pick a 109. First off
there's more room in the cab due to the tub bulkhead being
further back so more leg room and of course you can carry more
stuff around. Delving deeper an ex-MOD 109 would be my number
choice with the dropped spring hangers, plus the MOD bits such
as twin tanks, oil cooler, beefed up rear crossmember etc - all
nice to have. Straight body panels may be harder to find but not
impossible. As historic tax is now rolling you could hedge your
bets and go for something not quite there yet, something '75-'76
may fit the bill and will be cheaper.

That's some great advice there. Cheers. I think I will be
patient and wait for a nice Bargin. And a good point about the
tax :)

I would guess this will fetch about as much as a project will
do, although some gentle recommissioning should see it on the
road again so perhaps not so much of a project if that makes
sense. These are top of the tree from a classic standpoint and
are swiftly heading the way of series ones in value, if you have
the cash for a galvy chassis and bulkhead it would be worth
considering putting that idea to one side and investing in a
seriously pukka motor like this if you can live with it 100%
original. It's hard to see how you could lose money in the
medium term. Do the mechanicals, a rub over with a WD-40 soaked
rag and voila. :giddy:

See what I mean? This looks shiny but isn't right, not in the
same league as when Dunsfold did UAA392 and look at the price.

Also being in the market for another one i cant believe of the
prices they're making on eBay.. makes me even more gutted that I
sold JJ a couple of years ago..
Either need to work harder or blow the savings..

I'm regretting selling the one I had a few years ago for £500,
bodywork was straight and only needed a chassis :( just didint
have the space at the time.
