Over-reading gauge or over-heating engine?

Right, my temp gauge sits at about 2/3rds normally, and on a hot
day climbs up to just below the red.
Engine is a 200/300Tdi combo.
Any recommendations on how to find out the temperature
independently so I can work out if it is the cooling or the
sender/gauge that this causing the issue?

Point it just under the thermostat housing...very accurate and
handy for lots of jobs...well it is for me,
When you say 200/300 combo...what do you mean????

There is nothing better than one of those beams that you 'fire '
at different parts of the engine.
My first engine ran hot when I bought it, just stayed under the
red but was ok, swapped it and the second one did the same so I
thought the gauge overread. The third one showed the needle on
'N' therefore teh first two just ran hotter than this one but al
the same type of engine. None were a problem in the coling dept.

Ta muchly - the combo is: 200Tdi bottom end, 300tdi "top end"
and turbo...

Importantly, what's it installed in, and what instruments are
fitted? Modern senders read very high on Series instruments. Use
an older pre-owned/road tested unit where possible. The threads
SHOULD be the same.

AR is correct,I put My series temp sender into the tdi,works a
treat. :lightblb:

I had all sorts of bother a while back with this on the 88 (2.5
petrol). I tried various senders including a couple of new ones
with the blue label. Needless to say they didn't work. A genuine
one solved it. I'd go with what Jim says, try a known good one.
Or fit a new one to a mate's motor and check it reads right
first.

Right, I've ordered one of those IR thermometer thingys.
Interestingly today I've noticed that while driving, gauge goes
up to just below red. I've the electric fan on and heater on
full chat for maximum cooling.
At idle for a while, in traffic for e.g.) it then comes back
down and sits bang in the middle.
So my thoughts are now, either voltage stabiliser is knackered,
and when the alternator is kicking out some decent power it
throws the gauge, or it is a genuine cooling issue. The fact
that it goes at sits back in the middle makes me inclined to
rule out the sender.
I've got a new solid state voltage stabiliser so I'll try and
chuck that in this weekend. If that makes no difference, then
its investigation time with the thermometer, and possibly some
jiggery pokery with the fan/rad/intercooler set up.
Out of interest do many here run a Series rad with a Tdi?
