Chassis Fabrication

In the next couple of years I fully intend to build at least one
SWB chassis from scratch.
Could do with two TBH and at todays prices that's about £3K,
plus whatever the price goes up by while I'm trying to scrape
the dosh together
AFAIK there are only two or three parts of the chassis that I
can't get done myself.
1. The upper shock absorber mount tubes.
2. The front spring bush tubes
3. Possibly the steering relay tube, but I may have another way
around that.
The above are all going to need turning on a lathe AFAIK.
So I'm putting my feelers out now in the hope that some friendly
lathe owning person might volunteer to do the work at a
reasonable price.
Oh and yes by the way, I'm well aware that there are hidden
stiffeners and things inside the box sections of a series
chassis.
How do I intend to find out exactly where?
By hacking apart a couple of rotted out chassis, the same as
everyone else who has built replacement chassis has :smilewide:

Can't you just use off the shelf tube for those? I bet Rover
did.

A good steel tube stockholder should sort you out most of the
sizes you need. Some older imperial sizes are no longer made so
altering the nearest metric size will be the way forward. I have
a lathe here in the midlands if you get round to doing the job.

Upper shock mounts on a 109 are a standard tube, can't remember
which but I got them off the shelf when I did my 109 - and upper
bushes are the same as an 88 so that's them covered
I'd be surprised if the relay tube wasn't a standard size as
well

I'd have thought that the bush tubes would have been machined,
after all the bushes are an interference fit and it's got to be
reasonably accurate.
Alternatively Rover might have bored them after the chassis main
rails had been fully welded.
Easy enough if you're building thousands of them, but bloody
expensive if you've got to pay someone to do them on a CNC
machine as a one off.
The shock tubes are funny looking things.
Basically you could make them up out of two components : a long
thin very thick walled tube which passes right through the
chassis box, and a short fat spacer which slides over the
former.
I think the short fat spacer will have to be turned ???
There's a few other little turned bits I forgot about too -
like the spacer washers on the spring eyes.
Nothing very difficult though.

I have a length of tube which is almost perfect I just needed to
grind it smooth where the weld is inside.
I have supplied a couple of these to people so if you get the
project going give me a shout and I will post you section out.

TBH I'll recycle bits off other old chassis if they're
absolutely solid.
I'm not going to build a chassis to sell on, this is for my own
personal use.
I appreciate that a lot of relay tubes get cut apart with a
grinder because it seems to be the only way to get the relay
out.
