       gearbox swap

Hi all, forgive my ignorance but I am fairly new to Land Rovers.
I own a 1968/9 S2a with its original gearbox to which I was
going to fit a Fairey overdrive I bought, a friend has come
across an S3 gearbox which I assume are all syncro? with a power
take off on it. Now is this a straight forward job swapping over
or will I need any modifications or adapter plates doing? It has
its original 2.25 diesel engine fitted and my old gearbox is in
normal working order. Is the S3 better or should I just whack my
overdrive on my original? All advice and tips greatly
       appreciated. Thanks!

Generally speaking the 2a box is stronger than a 3 box but
gearbox numbers would help. The earlier series 3 boxes had
design flaws that were worked out as time went on, if the
gearbox number ends in a 'C' or 'D' it's half decent. The clutch
release mechanism changed significantly between 2a and 3 so
you'd have to take that into account. If there's nothing wrong
with your current box I'd leave it in and fit the overdrive.
Nowt wrong with acquiring the series 3 though, PTO stuff fetches
a fair few quit on eBay... :smilewide:

Thanks Noel I will look for the numbers tomorrow, in my
ignorance I just assumed that fully syncro would be better. I
will post up the relevant numbers as soon as I pick up the new
       box.

My technical understanding isn't the best but as far as I
remember the series 3 box was a bit of a compromise, there
wasn't the cash to redevelop it properly so 1st and 2nd gear
were weaker/smaller to squeeze the syncro in. :(

If you did want to fit it you would need a clutch cover and prob
a plate to suit the S3...a slave cylinder and pipe work...maybe
a master cylinder but I'm not sure about that,
The box would req that it still had its release arm
fitted....maybe other stuff tat I cant think of at the moment.
       Nick.
