       200tdi or 2.25petrol?

       Evening all.
I want your opinion on this and a bit of advice please.
After having to sell my last project due to space a few years
ago, I now have the space to do a new project. My last series 3
was a swb petrol that needed a chassis an only a few other bits
but engine was sweet as a nut an I loved the pur and smell or
the old thing (I'm not crazy am I?)
Now the question is what are your thoughts on 200tdi's compared
to the petrols? Obviously there's an economy thing but I have a
       car economy.
I only ask this as I know where a series 3 sits with a fresh 200
conversion done buy my local landrover specialist but needs a
new chassis really an a few other bits, but is quite smart for
       the age.
Thanks for your opinions and I hope I haven't offened anyone by
       mentioning the dirty boingy engine...

if its a daily drive tdi it, if not and the 2,25 is as good as
you say stick with that as it much quiter and i right in every
sense, i have tdied mine as it will be my work motor and get
some miles and the price of running 2.25 would cripple me. but
then there is always lpg which makes it cheaper to run but not
       as cheap as 200 tdi.

TDIs are noisy bastards. I have a DI in my s3 swb but will most
definitely not be doing that to my dormobile rebuild. That will
be powered by an engine running on proper fuel (all be it with
       six cylinders 😊).

       TDIs ARE NOISY BASTARDS!
       What?
I SAID TDIs ARE NOISY BASTARDS!
       Switch the bugger off!
I said ^ what the poster above said. Tdi engines themselves
aren't really noisy but they shake everything about a lot more,
so you get a lot more noise all-round, especially if everything
isn't bolted together how it should be. I wouldn't change mine
       though.
It's not about going fast but having a Tdi means you can keep up
a decent cruising speed on the motorway with little effort and
go up hills without constantly swapping cogs and crawling along.

If economy is your main concern fit one (but maybe a series LR
isn't the best choice for that)
Otherwise stick with the proper engine

I think you are crazy for wanting a series three with its ugly
gay plastic dash when you could get a late IIA for the same sort
       of money.
As for the engine choice, if it's not your DD I'd go for the
       petrol every time.
You can hardly give those engines away, all the bits and pieces
       are cheap and freely available.

Thanks. It's won't be my daily drive so I think I will skip the
200 an try and find a petrol, I do like the proper engine :)
Also I quite like the series 3 dash...
Toots- what are the 6cyl's like as I've seen a couple 109s with
them in? Much the same as the 2.25 just 2 more cylinders or are
       they as complete different design?
       Cheers

Sixes are completely different to the 2.25 (except the Santana
Spanish made units that were one and a half 2.25s stuck
together). The six got an unjustifiably bad reputation and
certainly has it's plus points but there is nothing as hassle
free as the 2.25 petrol in my experience. The advantage of a 109
with a six is it will be cheaper than a 2.25, and 109s are
cheaper than 88s so there are some real bargains to be had. Just
make sure it's a good lump as whilst not expensive (usually) a
decent six can be hard to find these days.
Mark Rumsey (sadly no longer with us) wrote an excellent article
over on the s2c a number of years ago titled something like "is
the six really for you" - I wish I'd saved a copy as it really
summed up the pros and cons superbly.
I have a Tdi in a lightweight and I agree with what's been said
       - it's great if you need/want extra power and economy. Other
than that's it's quite horrid in comparison to any of the series
       factory petrol units.

I've got a '69 SWB to put together in the next couple of years.
Originally a petrol, I've got a sneaking desire to put a two
and a quarter petrol back in there.
Slow and guzzling maybe, but also very user friendly.
Thinking petrol engine, FWH, Overdrive, Electric Fan.
Basically what I might have been driving 30 years ago.

Saying that if economy is your main concern then a series isn't
the best choice doesn't come into it. Economy is relative. You
may as well say that if economy is your main concern then don't
own any kind of 4x4 or vehicle or any vehicle you drive for
leisure - don't have a second motor that's used for anything
       other than commuting or business.
I like the look of series motors and I like their simplicity. So
if I want to do the things a 4x4 can do then that's what I want.
Just because I want to save on fuel doesn't mean a series isn't
the best choice if you can modify it so it retains the look, the
       simplicity yet be more economical.
Diesel costs about 9p per litre more than petrol but a Tdi will
do up to 45mpg on a steady run, whereas the 2.25 petrol will do
only half that at its best.
It comes down to how you intend to use the motor and I don't
just mean as a daily drive. If all you're going to do is pootle
around locally and maybe go park up and polish it at a show then
the petrol isn't going to use enough fuel more to worry about.
But if you're regularly going to do some miles, greenlaning,
euroleafing and what have you then you need to think of the fuel
       bill.
