Cheap Chassis Advice
By: Loz Date: August 25, 2014, 6:43 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi All. My S111 chassis is definitely dead, with a front, rear,
mid crossmember required, plus a fuel-tank outrigger and main
rail repair (split nearly right through near shock and 2ft of
lower hanging off under front floor). So I am in need of an S111
chassis, which I'm not averse to a little work on. Anyone have
something savable lying around or any advice on where to get the
cheapest possible galv replacement. Richard's want £1122, plus
delivery, plus VAT, so over £1.5K. I would have to rob a bank!
Cheers

Richards at present are the only lot doing series chassis and
prices have increased markedly in recent years (for comparison I
got a galv series 3 military spec 88 chassis from Marslands
through Paddocks for £535+vat in 2006). You're best off keeping
an eye on eBay for a failed project I reckon, my mate has picked
up a couple over the last few years for considerably less than
the chassis costs new now.

Richards used to do the 88" at £540 + VAT in 2007, I bought
three of them then. I broke up a couple of 88" with galvanised
chassis and sold the chassis on eBay around the same time and
only got £350 each for them... How times change!

Faced with that it is sometimes cheaper to find a better base to
start with.

I ebayed a S3 galv one in 2006 and only got £400
Seriously considering building one from scratch.
If I can get a collection of solid cross members together ( you
sometimes find these in perfect condition on an otherwise rotted
out chassis) I'll build new main rails and use some of the
pattern stuff too.
Fuck the naysayers I know that I'm well capable of that.

There was a guy featured in LRO or one of those mags late 90s
that built a 109 chassis from plate, he used extra thick stuff I
believe, so it's doable IF you can be arsed !

It's not going to happen while I'm working in a press shop.
Hopefully when I have successfully extracted myself from this
shit hole and got back into welding and fabrication it will
become easy.
Especially if I end up working some long overtime shifts with
the management out of the way.
No need to go OTT on thickness and certainly no more than the
3mm that Marslands used ffor a normal 88 or 109.

I know this is not exactly what you want, but it does prove a
point that it could be done?

... read all the blurb. I stumbled across it when looking for
something completely different!
