Auto box in a series

Hi guys and girls, I've heard that there was an auto box
conversion plate that Ashcroft made that joined the series
tranny box to a bourgwarner 3 speed auto. Can any of you throw
some light on this subject? Even better if anyone knows where
there is one for sale or one that I can take measurements etc
from.

I do believe you're correct although it seems that was a long
time back. I'd suggest your first port of call should be
Ashcrofts themselves, they do seem pretty helpful.

IIRC didn't the need to keep the whole plot as short as possible
result in a sort of semi auto set up?
You sstill got a torque converter and mega strong epicyclic
gears, but you had to manually make it shift ratios

when I had the thought and posted the question it was close of

Hi
I fitted this setup, (BW66 & adapter) into a much modified 88
for the missus - apart from the autobox needing a rebuild due to
bolloxed internals it wasn't that bad to do the conversion which
fits to a modified standard transferbox - the input hole in the
is increased in diameter to suit the conversion piece. There is
a spud shaft that fits in place of the standard input which is
supported between a pair of taper bearings rendering the pto
useless sadly. With the 3.5 providing power it's a grin inducing
beast theoretically good for over a ton but absolutely fantastic
in low box, feels unstoppable.
I will be redoing the transmission tunnel shortly if you want
some photos.

Very keen to see photos. Even pop and visit you sometime. Where
did you get the adaptor plate from? Any info would really be
helpful. Doing this conversion will secure Doris's future in my
ownership.

Your most welcome to come have a look round ,I'm based about 3
miles from the south side of the dartford crossing - I got the
autobox and conversion parts over a couple of years via the
dreaded bay of e. Found the modified transferbox came with
mismatched gears preventing low box from engaging at all. swaped
in gears from the original transferbox and all is now ok.
The autobox itself was found to have been mistreated in the
tomcat it had been fitted to, and required a full rebuild which
hurt the pocket considerably.
Overall I really like the way it's all turned out.

So do you actually get all the features of the auto box retained
with this conversion ???
I can remember reading up about an auto conversion which
involved losing the rear pump (ie the one which tells it how
fast the output shaft is turning)
The result was a sort of semi auto set up.
Still mega strong and no clutch pedal but you had to manually
shift gear.
Not as grin inducing as having it all done for you.

Yup fully functioning auto - all three forward gears & reverse!
Things are a bit hectic at the moment but I'll take photos when
I get round to finishing off the tunnel and rerouting the
gearbox cooling pipes.

Oh and in the 109 I have a 300tdi and autobox from a 96 disco,
which is my daily drive. higher MPG but the 88 is more smiles
per mile. :rolleye0012:
