       In Defence of Britpart
By: ferretjuggler Date: August 18, 2014, 12:50 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Just fitted my Britpart exhaust system today.
Many thanks to 5988 in giving me the dimensions and location of
the mounting brackets that were missing from the chassis

       Exhaust fits a treat.
Of course I haven't fired the engine up yet, but it's looking
       good.
My vent flap seals fitted perfectly ( turns out that they were
       Britpart after all)
And the Britpart air filter hose that I bought out of
desperation ( £12 against about £80 genuine LR I believe) turns
out to be as solid as an original one.
I'd been warned against the Blue Box ones and was expecting
       something really cheap and nasty.
       Really chuffed with the thing.
So it looks like things are improving down in darkest
       Shropshire.
Of course what the durability of these parts is remains to be
       seen.
But at least they fit properly now.

They source parts from all over, so not all will be from the
same crappy manufacturing lines - for example their blue bagged
propshafts are GKN. I had a complete set of BP brakes for a
while too, which were perfectly adequate in dry conditions, and
I fitted BP big end nuts to a 2.5 a few years ago that continues
       to run today.
On the other hand I have never had success with their electrical
or their rubber items. Thank goodness they don't work in the
       "Adult Toys" industry.

Don't count your chickens the britpart 'rubber goods' seem to
fall apart after 6 months not sure why.

Something to do with me right additives in the rubber.
Otherwise you get rapid UV degradation.
Michelin Tyres are supposed to be the absolute Kings at that
       game.
I've noticed that BF Goodrich tyres seem to last well stood out.
Unfortunately not so for the Nanking Wide Conqueror POS tyres on
       the front of my 88.
Fine when I bought them two years ago and now UV cracked to
       fuck.
Lucky that I only paid £22 for them.

Strangely, the only things Britpart that I have fitted on the
Beastie, that have at least fitted ok and worked fine are the
wheel cylinders. Other than that everything of theirs has either
not fitted, not worked or worn out already. The rubber handbrake
and hi-lo lever boots have lasted less than six sodding months
and both have literally just fallen to pieces. Once I've sorted
the gearbox I need a new steering relay but I will not be using
       one of theirs!

Brave man! Still if they are working then you've been lucky,
there was a lot of people claiming they leaked.
To the OP, good luck maybe you've got a decent part from them
this time lets hope. Let us know in 6/12/18 months time and
confirm the baffles are still intact and it hasn't rotton
       through!

I "fitted" a Shitfart ( from Paddocks) cheapo exhaust system
recently and had to bodge & angle the joins in all kinds of
funny ways to avoid it clouting the chassis, ( esp the front
'down' pipe) ..lots of exhaust assembly paste too,
another time I'll just make one of my famous diy short "out the
side'' exhausts out of whatever is lying around at the time ::)

I have had Nanking Wide Conqueror's fitted to my Series One for
at least 10 years and mine are still fine.
