Tax exempt boingies aren't exactly rare. What don't
understand is, how the hell do they get past the mot?

As Jim said, it's not about the MOT but then the police simply
aren't interested if you report what is an obviously fraudulent
motor.
A couple of years ago, at a show, I spied a 90 with a 1963 reg
and a tax-exempt disc in the window. I had a good nosey round
and under it.It was 100% boinger. Chassis, axles, engine,
gearbox, bodywork, you name it it had no series parts on it
whatsoever.
I took pics and contacted the officer of a well-known club who
is supposed to deal with these matters. He didn't even reply...
So, another member of this forum contacted the DVLA, who said
that it wasn't their responsibility. He then contacted his local
plod and was told that because the motor was not seen on their
patch they weren't interested. They also asked how he knew it
was fraudulent.
Basically, no one in authority actually gives a fuck and now
they're doing away with tax discs we won't be able to tell which
ones have a legit "personal reg." and which ones are claiming
tax-exemption so they'll all get away with it. Though,
personally, I think having a "personal reg." is the bigger
crime. :gay:

I notice that in addition to no tax disc, they're now
considering doing away with MOT for vehicles 30yrs and over !

Substantially original motors..... engine swaps should be OK
like a TDI into a 4 pot. 6 pots might not be any bother either.
Its just mountings at the end of the day.

I don't favour MOTs being done away with on vehicles as young as
30. There are chavs still driving mk3 Escorts of that era and it
would only encourage more of them to pick an older motor to
skirt round the MOT.

I don't like the idea either.
IIRC didn't the Germans have a bonkers plan to turn "Historic
Vehicle" into a taxation class where you could only drive on a
public road on your way to or from a Historic Vehicle Show or
Rally ?
Worse still you would be required to have a Police escort (which
you would have to pay for)
Fortunately this loony tunes idea got chucked out and never
become EU law.
But I regard with deep suspicion anything which seems to move
older vehicles into a sort of segregated zone away from
mainstream vehicles used for everyday transport

It's not possible for them to deregulate a currently legal
vehicle just for taxation purposes.... Yes, if it were
inherently dangerous (Ford Pinto??) then that's
understandable... but a precedent has been set. I have been
using mine 6 years as a daily driver. Nobody can "all of a
sudden" just tell me it's illegal to use. Not that I ever see
any plod on my commute anyway... I tend to travel at shift
change times!

There already is provision in the VED laws to restrict use of
vehicles in the historic class. Take a nice old London Transport
Routemaster. Historic tax is fine if it's used privately and not
for hire and reward. Use it as a bus then the taxation class is
bus and you're relieved of 500 quid. I'd wager the same is true
of an HGV.

What I'm concerned about is the nimby PC green tree hugging
brigade will seize upon the fact that historic vehicles could be
considered to be unsafe and environment damaging.
Common sense is out of the window with these people.
They'll start foaming at the mouth at the mention of excessive
hydrocarbons, and heaven forbid that the little luvvies should
ever realise that older vehicles are being rebuilt and
maintained by UNQUALIFIED MECHANICS

I love how the media keeps banging on about Co2 emissions...
yeah, the stuff that plants like, and in turn, they make
oxygen..... for us to breathe it etc. So we don't need to cut
down on driving/breathing etc, we need to plant more trees.

Most normal people use their historic motors at weekends only
but I do think doing away with the MOT totally is a bad idea
maybe the could make it every other year and start it from the
tax exemption date
