Since they tended to register stuff in batches, you're probably
right about it being a fire engine then..

Well it was a successful day of sorts. I bled the fuel system
and got the engine (turns out it's a Dorothy Perkins 4.236)
running out of a jerry can. It sounds fine which is a relief. A
bit smokey when revved from cold but I guess that's to be
expected from an old diesel lump like this. It may not have run
for six years as well so I'm feeling :giddy: about that.
It thought it was worth a go getting it to move under it's own
power so after freeing off and lubricating the stop cable,
high/low and 4wd linkage I stuck it in 1st low and flicked the
starter. It made a horrible noise from the gearbox and didn't
move. 2nd low and off we went in relative quiet and smoothness.
Reverse behaves like 1st i.e. fucked. I do have a suffix D
series 3 box kicking about from a lightweight I broke up
recently, I think that'll be heading in the direction of the FC.

Probably just as well; I imagine the combination of the original
low ratio 1 ton gearing and a slow revving Dorothy would make a
Massey Ferguson look quick.

Quite unexpectedly Doug it has a standard ratio gearbox, a
series 2a suffix E with Bowden cable operated Fairey overdrive.
I'm guessing the PO that converted it probably came to the same
conclusion you have. :-?

I certainly woudn't make a habit of pulling away in 1st with a
4236! It could rip your clutch out if you rev it hard!
I have one in my 101 and it has to be a fairly steep hill to
pull away in 1st and then only very very gently!
Not that I've had any problems with mine. I once met someone who
had damaged a gearbox and a couple of overdrives with a 4236
....and then I saw the way he drove.....!!!
