       Train Sets
By: StuartN Date: August 8, 2014, 7:08 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I am interested in starting a small train set-up to go in the
loft. I don't have much of a budget for yet another hobby so I
was hoping for some advice on good sets/ places to buy/ how to
       get started.
Just a bit of nostalgia for the one my Dad set up for me when I
       was a bairn.
Pretty sure some of you sad fuckers will know of a good way to
       get going on a budget.

Keep an eye on Thomas Watson's catalogue. They get all sorts of
cool stuff from house clearances that doesn't make much
I got some scalextric sold all the loose bits, made a profit and
       kept the older sets.
My mates been getting bits of train set from freecycle recently
       might be worth a look..

They have them generally once a month.

You tend to have to pay top dollar at vectis for the decent
stuff tho. Saying that the mixed lots can go cheaply

Try joining RMWeb. Tis a bit like here only its for model
railways....oh, and theres no feckin swearing :toothless:
Loads of advice and a good classifieds section with stuff at
       mate rates (mostly).
If youve never built one before maybe best to stick with
settrack (pre formed curves, straights in set lengths etc) made
by Hornby, Peco etc. This stuff is normally available in bundles
quite cheaply on ebay. You want modern (15 yrs ish old up to
date) track as it is nickel silver as opposed to steel. It
doesnt rust..... get yourself a plan book (hornby or peco) as
this takes all the trial and error out of 'designing' your own.
Then theres knowing which rolling stock to buy for best value
for money, running qualities, etc etc Ask away if theres owt you
       want to know
       Cheers,
       Tony

Thanks for that folks, some stuff to look at there.
Looking forward to getting back up and running.
Considering the Western Spirit set by Hornby.

Careful Stuart. Some model railway nerds (Dave) get upset if you
call it a train set. :rolleye0012:

       Stuart,
Had a look at the western spirit set. I personally would stick
with a bigger loco as the little 4 wheelers (as in that set)
tend not to be the best or most reliable performers. Bachmann do
a simillar set with a larger tank engine. There are a few on
ebay at mo for about twenty quid.
       Cheers
       Tony
