I had a Wilesco as a kid, the Kraut version of a Mamod and just
as much fun, and they still make them today. Mamod used to do a
steam marine engine on a plate to nail into the model of your
choice. Had one of those too.

How is that these things have become 'anorak' toys, I get the
impression it's not kids with them anymore.

Just as a matter of interest. Was that hexamine powering
that?

Theyre them solid fuel gel type blocks that are going round
instead of meths. It's apparently safer for the cherubs..

I used to have one of the Mamod traction engines (and a static
one) as a kid ( with some of the 'power tools' that went with
'em , hammers and various line shaft accessories etc ) , can't
believe what some of them go for on ebay nowadays..
Bet the EU safety Nazis wouldn't allow todays kids to play with
burning meths !

I had as much fun making fire circles on the path and watching
it burn out without a trace. Fire , one of the best toys out
there

^ Wot he said ! I converted a couple of Tamiya German tanks to
be Flamethrower tanks when I was about 12, plastic tubing down
barrel , experimented with both gas and lighter fluid, the
lighter fluid under pressure was best and had that realistic
burning liquid effect that caught fire on the 'target' nicely
:toothless:

Fools, they know nothing these days... to think they'd say that
was dangerous.
Christ, I'd forgotten about overfilling and the meths flame
trail. I can remember taking mine into class one day and my form
teacher letting me run it across the science-block floor. I
suspect he would be fired along with the floor today.
Used shotgun cartridges in the fields where I lived still had
tiny traces of unburnt cordite in them. Get a dozen and scrape
it out, twas good clean fun.
