Ashcroft High Ration Transfer Case Kit

Morning All
Anyone on here got any experience of these?

Thinking about getting one to replace an overdrive and would
like some feedback if you have one.
Would really like to see/hear have a drive in/of one if anyone
is near Dorset.

What are they like? They're like driving with the overdrive
permanently engaged. Ok if your engine has the torque to pull
the gearing without the flexibility an overdrive gives.
Cheaper to swap your diffs for 3.54 ones and get your speedo
recalibrated. Doing that has the benefit of reducing the speed
the props are whirling around at too.
IMHO, an overdrive makes more sense.

as said if you have a big engine to pull the gearing its great I
have one in my series 1 (200tdi) imho much better then 3.54
diffs if you use low range and better then an overdrive as it
operates in every gear instead of overdrive which should only be
3rd and 4th

I have one in a swb series 3 with 200di [ie no turbo] and fitted
it in place of overdrive , makes 1st usable and makes all gear
ratios longer , get into 4th quite quickly and tend to stay
there around town. Having had the overdrive 7 years before
fitting high ratio transfer case I prefer the latter.
Will need to drop back to 3rd on long/steep hills , probably
would not if I fitted the turbo but last trip out Jarrow to
Alston and back with 3 passengers and kit for a weekend in the
hills averaged 35ml/gallon.

I had the ashcroft box in with a 200Tdi conversion, and it was
considerably quieter than an overdrive,
however it does make you spend more time in 3rd than you would
with a standard box, and contrary to popular opinion the series
3 box does not really like 111bhp.
It really depends what you plan to use the vehicle for, mine
was a 109 pickup that was often carrying a full load, and it
stripped 3 teeth off 3rd gear on a good box that I had rebuilt
myself. Ive taken the ashcroft box off, and fitted an overdrive,
because that way I spend more time in 4th which is straight
through and no layshaft involved.
I am sure the Ashcroft box is fine for medium duty and probably
fine in an 88, or even in a Di.
