200 TDi ?
DIR By: ferretjuggler

IF I were to put one in, and it's only an IF so far, what
would I get?
I mean in terms of fuel milage, and sustainable cruising
speeds?
To all those who find the hair starting to stand up on the back
of their neck, at just the mention of such an act of mutilation,
I would like to point out that I have TWO 88" IIAs, the 1970
diesel which is solid but will never be mint, and a 1969
petrol, which I am slowly transforming from a pile of rotten
bits, into something that will be very tidy.
And standard.
It's the diesel that I'm considering bastardising.
It's fine for chugging down country lanes, but on major roads
and motorways  it's a bit stressful.
What I have read about TDi conversions, is that they are almost
entirely reversible, so if I make the effort, then don't get
on with it, I can always flog it again.

To get the most out of the TDi you need to up the gearing too,
so take that into account when doing your sums.
I run an overdrive and 3.54 diffs in my 109" and it pulls both
no problem.
I can cruise anywhere up to 80, but it seems happiest at 70-75.
Flat out, downhill with a following wind, is a bit over 90.
Speeds verified by gps rather than the speedo, which thinks I'm
going much slower due to still being set for 4.7 diffs.
General biffing about and the odd 75mph blast to work sees about
29mpg over a tankful. A motorway run at a steady 70-75 returns
31mpg; dropping down to a steady 60 ups the fuel to about 34mpg,
but most of the time I'm not able to be so restrained.
Done with thought and care, the conversion is entirely
reversible. The fact you need no one-off machining or conversion
kit, and that you can use factory parts pretty much everywhere,
make it fairly much unique in conversion terms.
Hope this helps, Glen.

I totally agree with Glen. I put the TDI in Doris ( series 3 88
) With over drive and disco diffs. I'm running on 235 85 16
tyres and she is happy all day long at 70-75. Mpg is about 31-32
mpg. I would advise keeping the turbo and inter cooler set up.
One thing to remember though is to have your brakes in tip top
condition. Stopping at 75+ with crap brakes is not for the faint
hearted!
Does bring a little smile to my face too when you see people' s
expressions as you go wizzing past them in your 40 year old
Landy.

Thanks for that.
Even with the OD the poor old diesel engine I have sounds
strained above 55.
So I'd need to factor in some RR 3.54 diffs too.
Nothing much to worry about.
30+ mpg is certainly better than what I'm getting now.

I also get scary speeds and 31mpg in an 86" 200tdi standard
diffs no overdrive but Ashcroft conversion in the box. Brakes
are worry tho :toothless:

I got lucky. .
Picked up a front axle from a S3 six pot for just £50.
Bought it for the good swivel housings TBH, but it has the wide
TLS brakes fitted.
Trouble is the drums have had chunks taken out of the rims by
twats knocking the drums off with a hammer.
Will I ever be able to buy new replacements ?

The difference is so worthwhile. The only addition to what has
been said so far is that I didn't bother with the intercooler.
The result is an easier job with less plumbing and negligible
difference in performance. :lightblb:

I did take a look at someones attempt to fit what was maybe a
disco? rad and intercooler into a S3 radiator panel.
Would have been viable if he had paid someone with a HD sheet
folder to sort out the tinware I thought.
Instead he made a complete fuck up of it in order to save a few
quid.
Oh well ???

Simpler conversion if fitted as a 200di...flog the turbo..you
will get slighty more MPG as well and a tidy uncluttered engine
bay more in keeping with a series,
I fitted one around 4 years ago....took my o/d off and fitted
3.5 diffs...down side of them...puts your speedo out...I do have
a fix for it...and you may need to weld oil fillers to your diff
casing.
Nick.
