Cylinder head and engine condition

Removed the cylinder head this evening. The engine used to smoke
a bit on start up which I put down to the valve stem oil seals
but ran generally ok.
From the photos do the condition of the tops of the pistons
point to any other issues and what is the best way of cleaning
them up?
Should I be looking at doing anything else whilst the head is
off?
Would I be better of removing the pistons and renewing the rings
and cleaning up the bores?

Just looks like it could do with a clean up
If your doing valve seals I'd be inclined to lap the valves in
while there
I'd not change the rings unless the bores are honed (or machined
if needed) - can't see them in your pics
Top of the pistons just look like a used engine, nothing to
worry about

Whilst you are in there playing with the head, have a good look
at the valve guides and measure the valve stems. Guides are easy
enough to change if you can turn up a drift to knock them out. I
fitted some from Paddocks and had to ream all the exhaust guides
out after fitting so they must have been a bit oversize on
outside diameter. On the diesel they where 11/64" for exaust and
5/16" for inlet, those sizes are from memory though.........Have

You do not show pic of gasket but it looks to me like cylinder 3
and maybe 4 has had oil leaking into cylinder from pushrod area.
Once clean check for signs of cracks on head and block in that
area.

Don't clean the tops of the pistons. Remove any flaking crud but
that's it.

Just read the comment from serious re bores 3/4. :lightblb: Be
sure to re torque the head after warm up. Not strictly required
with a composite gasket but something I always do and never had
a failure.

Well I think if you don’t have proper knowledge of engine
internal parts and the way to clean them then don’t try to do it
your own. Like you can see on wwwPOSSIBLE SPAMMY LINK
REMOVED.com that each engine has some different components, so
they require expertise to maintain it properly. Though you have
opened the engine at your own, but do call an expert mechanic
that will help you out in the right way.

Don't agree about not trying it on your own
A Land Rover is as basic as they come and there is no reason not
to work on it yourself, even with little experience.
There is nothing in a Series engine bay that cannot be mastered
with the aid of a workshop manual and a little advice from the
internet.
