Gearbox Mounts

I have got a problem with my Series 3 88 in that when pulling
away from standstill in first/second and reverse it is very
difficult to do this smoothly without the vehicle shuddering.
The problem is not as severe when in 4WD. All changes smooth
once I have got the old girl rolling. I have checked the
propshaft UJ's and they are OK. I think the problem is the
gearbox mounts as there seems to be quite a bit of movement in
the gearbox when levered with a pry bar.
My question is can I replace the mounts without removing the
gearbox? I was planning on removing the bolts and jacking up the
gearbox and fitting the replacements. I am guessing I will have
to remove the floor but just wondered if this was possible.

Yes it is, you'll need to remove the gearbox brackets that bolt
to the chassis as well to fi them, I think

Yep, it's do-able. No need to remove the floor but it is a bit
fiddly and you will need the jack things carefully so as to not
strain the engine mounts as you tip things up!

If you can afford them get genuine mounts, I used cheap pattern
engine mounts and they didn't last long. Is there any oil from
the bell housing when you remove the wading plug ? rear main
seal or gearbox input shaft seal letting oil contaminate the
clutch is another possibility for shudder. If when the mounts
are changed you still get shudder and no serious amount of oil
is present it may be the anti shudder springs in the clutch
friction plate are loose. Engine or gearbox out to change the
clutch, your choice but always a good time to give everything a
good clean ! I turned a mandrel to line the clutch plate up, you
are welcome to it health reasons prevent me from playing with
Landies now.

Thanks for all the good advice and so quickly too.
I have already bought the mounts (Allmakes) so hopefully they
will be OK. I had thought about oil on the clutch Divie but not
the springs on the clutch plate. I don't have a wading plug
(havn't done any wading yet either!) but there doesn't seem to
be any oil coming out of the hole. Thanks for the offer of the
mandrel but I have a clutch aligning tool with 3 different sizes
which I bought about 30 years ago which hopefully should fit if
a clutch change is necessary.
Hope the mounts come out easier than the suspension bushes I
replaced last month. That has got to be the worst job ever on a
Landy.

I thought I'd ordered gearbox mounts, but on removal I noticed
the ones already on there were much smaller, and the new were
engine sized ones.
Should last longer, but driver's side will need a bit shaving
off to get the rubber onto the metal mount, plus a bit more so
you can twist it to align the holes with the chassis mounts. I
used a 4 foot crow bar!

Not sure if it applies to gearbox mounts but diesel engine
mounts are different to petrol ones. Some of the cheap sets
around claim to fit engine and gearbox but I have never tried
them.

Be careful when jacking your engine/gearbox up not to bend the
bulkhead!!! Ask me how I know! :rolleye0012:

I would more suspect oil on the clutch plate...quite common,
A temp fix to check is to chock the wheels handbrake off so not
to strain it....with nothing in front if it jumps the chocks...
Select 4th gear engine running and try to drive away....the aim
is to have the cluch slipping heard for about 30secs with out
stalling but putting the engine under load so its slowing down,
This will burn and surface oil off then remove chokes and see if
the judder has gone.
