Building a roof rack, need some gutter mount feet.

After looking around for a roof rack I've been amazed at the
mental prices people charge. I've a welder and a bender so i've
decided to have a go a knocking one together. I am only needing
it to carry my canoe and an awning tent sometimes, and was
thinking of a low profile 3/4 length one.
Now I'd prefer to buy the gutter mount feet / clamps. Yes I
could fab some but I think it might be more cost effective to
buy some...probably.
Problem is sourcing them, can't seem to find any...has anybody
else been down this road and could advise of somewhere to buy
decent clamps?

I'm sorry I can't offer any suggestions for where to get
something like that, but I have to say I bought one of those box
section jobbies off a well known online retailer for about £100
and I have to say when it arrived, I wished I'd made one
instead. The feet were just bits of flat welded on the ends of
the box sections with a bit of tube welded to the side. Fixing
was by an M8 setscrew through the tube and into a hook type
thing that went under the gutter and a nyloc nut to fasten it.

I got some off ebay from a camper gear seller. Think they
specialised in VW campers. can't remember the name but search
rack clamps or something and they should pop up at about 8 quid
each with postage.

I have considered fabricating one myself before but twp things
put me off.
Finding suitable clamps for a viable price and finish.
ie Painted, plastic coated, galvanised.
So how have you finished yours?

Right now to figure out how to fit a rack and an awning at the
same time, mmmm.

I was looking at this, try searching for transit roof bars on
fleabay mid height they go for OK money , if you get 2 pairs the
same ie 4 bars, you could make it in to a nice roof rack? or
just use the side bits?

have you sorted it out yet?
i have a low profile home made hot dip galvanised roof rack i
did in 2005.
it has also a rooftent that goes to it. dont know the state of
the canvas though been unused for so much:(
interested :toothless:
drink(*& hick up drink(*& .... must be the silly side of me
talking :)
i did mine all from scracth mounts i mean. it is still attached
to the abandoned hard top. :(

i should try take a close up at how i made them. it is just
using a flatbar. 6X20mm i think welded at end to make an
inverted T. the clamps are also home made. using L shaped 2mm
plate welded to a stud

Have a look at the clamps for the patriot roof racks, they are
much better than the Brownchurch etc as they spread the load
along the whole gutter - if you can weld and bend metal they
would be pretty trivial to fab up yourself!
