Graphite Grease

Hi all, While servicing Doris today I had a thought. I've used
the one shot graphite grease in the front swivel housings. I've
also put it in the steering box. What about using it in the
main gearbox, the Transfer box and also in the overdrive unit.
Reading up on the properties of the grease I can't see a reason
NOT to replace the EP90 with Graphite grease. It will help with
any leaks the gearbox's have.
Has anyone tried this and what was the out come? Is this idea a
massive NO NO? What are your thoughts please.

My first thought is you can't drain it so contaminants are in
there for good.
Second thought is if it was suitable then why don't Land Rover
specify it - they have for the swivels after all.
Third thought is the oil in the gearboxes doesn't just
lubricate, it dissipates heat. Will grease do that?
Personally I wouldn't be trying it unless I was happy to
sacrifice a gearbox. Maybe it would be fine, maybe not.

My opinion is that grease would be thrown off fast moving parts
leaving them with no lubricant.
Oil in gearboxes also cools the moving parts, grease would keep
the heat where it was. I also agree that any filings would be in
the grease and accelerate any wear.

also surely the amount of energy lost in churning the grease
will slow you down something terrible & lead to royally crap MPG
i shudder to think of the cost of the volume of grease neededto
fill a transmission with it too

Fair comments. The viscosity is similar to EP90 so I don't think
any extra effort will be needed. Reading up on the grease it
does say that one of its properties is the fact it sticks to
metal joints etc. I can understand now the servicing and
replacement of the grease issues. To be fair Doris only does
aprox 3500 miles pa so I don't expect lots of ware. The oil was
pretty clean that I changed yesterday.
The point Serieswan made about the cost of the volume of grease
needed is off putting. My gearbox is warn and in the future will
need rebuilding so if I can buy a late enough tub I might try it
out. Watch this space.
Further thoughts welcome please.

Grease has completely different properties to oil.
EP90 is quite thin for a reason.
Grease is thick and sticky. It won't coat everything the same,
it will stick to bits and be flung off, stick to the casing and
not lubricate.
What happens (and I have seen examples) is the gears will cut a
path through the grease and create a sort of hollow around
themselves. The grease will not flow back to fill the void like
oil does, and so the gears will run dry and very hot. Probably
to a catastrophic failure (gasp, melodrama)

Just don't go there, oil penetrates into things like bronze
bushes because it is thin enough. Why do we use one shot in
swivels ? Cos it does not leak out of dodgy swivels like oil.
Look at things like king pins on early rover cars EP 90 was used
not grease, people greased them and killed them because the
grease would not penetrate.

had while servicing Doris. EP90 it is then.
