How do you judge when a spring is too far gone to bother with ?

       If either:
       1. A leaf is broken or
       2. The whole shebang sags.
Saving the above, roll-up your bodging sleeves and break-out the
WD40/motor-cycle grease. If this bodge fails, (unlikely) then
you might have to do it properly ^^^. In my experience you
almost never need more and the expense of parabollox over and
above a set of greased springs is senseless. Factor in the time
and cos, and the differnce between the two is the size of a
gnat's-c**k. Those that do report a differnce are usually
justifying the dent in their bank-balance against corroded
leaves that no longer act liike springs.
In my mind thsi bodge is the very raison-d'etre of this site

Paraffin was suggested instead of wd40 on the previous
incarnation of OLLR. Put it in a squirty bottle and squirt away.
Keep them damp and excercise the springs if the good lady will
       help you.
Otherwise load up with bricks and do some laning

I used to strip my springs many years ago...even reshaped them
with a lump hammer and a suitable heavy section of steel with
       guide welded on....
I found the only way to remove the wrapped clamps without
breaking them (they are spring steel) and beak if bent to
far.....anyway I had to heat at the bend till red and then
       straighten,
On reassembly I just drilled them and fitted a bolt through as
       some makers do.
       Nick.

Hi Guys, after seeing this I realised my old springs, (which had
       just seperated), are probably rebuildable......
that said, I was going to scrap them in, but if anyone wants
them for free they are welcome, I can send pics if you want....
would have to be collected from Shropshire though.....

Today I finally ran out of patience with people promising to
bring me a full propane bottle, and decided I wasn't going to
be looking at a listing Land Rover any more (it was depressing
       me TBH)
I'd replaced the sagging OSR spring with a good used one.
This immediately resulted in it leaning the other way.
The replacement used NSR spring I'd got had potential, but two
       broken leaves.
So I cut the clamp bands with my grinder as high up as possible.
Dismantled the spring and carefully welded straight extensions
       onto the clamp bands.
Rebuilt the spring with two leaves pinched from the knackered
       OSR spring.
Drilled the extended clamp bands to take a 8mm bolts, then
       trimmed off the excess length.
I only needed to do the two inner clamps as the broken leaves
       were short ones.
Finally fitted this evening and at last I've got a Landy which
sits up properly at all four corners!
And a coat of Wilko black has disguised my handiwork from the
       MOT man. :giddy:
