Salisbury axles

I assumed all Salisbury diffs were the same ratio but the one
I've just bought - and just about to fit under my 88"
:smiley-furious: - appears to be different than the other one I
have? When I rotate the diff at the pinion the half shaft only
goes round 2 and a bit times compared to 4 and a bit on the
other one... WTF! Dmmy spit Dmmy spit

Is it cos the usual way leaves a wheel on the ground and the
diff cuts in ? Just a though try locking one hub up with the
brake adjuster and try again.

No, all Salisbury diffs are not the same ratio! There were three
ratios fitted to leafers. 3.54:1 on stage one V8s, 5.57:1 on the
101 forward control and 4.7:1 on everything else.

Count the teeth on the big wheel (crown wheel) and dived by
number of teeth on the little one (pinion) and hey resto you
have the ratio

The diff from an early 110 rear axle will fit, they are 3.54:1 I
swapped one in to mine to mate with the TDI.
Also if you are putting a Salisbury axle under a SWB I am fairly
sure you need to cut the spring mounts off the axle and move
them inboard to line up with the SWB springs if you haven't
already.

Yeh, the spring mounts are already moved. I counted the teeth on
the crown wheel on both salisbury axles I have and both have 47.
The one that appears to have a different ratio has a stamping on
the crown wheel saying 47x10 or 10x47, can't remember. I didn't
count the teeth on the pinion as after taking 3 axles to bits
and getting nowhere I went to a bbq drink(*&
