It has alot to do with how the engine is run, was it working
hard with a lean jet setting?, could happen within a few minutes
of running at full throttle or half an hour or more ect ect...
You say the compression still feels good so try a new plug
first, Have a look at your carb settings again, the bogging down
bit has me thinking its set a bit too lean, also worth checking
is that the fuel filter is sat at bottom of the tank with no
kinks or holes in the tubing, this would also cause the same
       symptoms of running lean.
If you find the rings are stuck, pour a bit of oil down the
cylinder to raise the compression so it'll start and run, run it
on a heavy oil mix in the petrol, the ring might free off this
way. otherwise its a strip down and assess the damage.
Is the fuel tank cap in good nick?, it needs to seal properly,
the tank needs to pressurize for the carb to draw fuel.
       Cheers, Jack.

Just regarding the carb, does it still have the plastic tune
limiters fitted to the jet screws? these can be prized off to
reveal Huskys weird jet screws, some of them have fine spline
drive jet screws, some are a "D" shaped head, both need special
drivers to tune them, or a bit of jiggery pokery with some
needle nosed pliers, and then there's the good old not-so weird
       slot headed ones.

Normal slotted heads on the needles
I didn't know that about the tank cap, will check. There was
fuel in the carb when I stripped and checked it, initially the
plug just didn't seem to be very wet ??? After a while it was
wet though. Will try again tonight
       Cheers

Nothing wrong with the piston ring as best I can see through the
exhaust port. No signs of over heating or piston damage.
Hunting down a new spark plug now

Thats good news then, At least you can rule that out.
With the plug being wet, but not firing, try a new plug, and
check for a good bright blue snap of a spark.
I have known ignition coils breakdown in a way that they work
one day and the next nothing, then the day after they work
again! Might be worth checking the coil and the earth wiring.
Good luck, It'll be worth it in the end!

had my small Stihl chainsaw a couple of years and for the past
two has been mucking about, bit the bullet and purchased a carb
kit, about £5, fitted it, still wouldn't fun clean, pissed owf
took the whole shebang to pieces and stuck in my sonic cleaner
for a while, rebuilt, run but not to good so replaced new
diaphram [lifter with old one, runs like a train,
embolden by this I retrieved an old Kawasaki hedge trimmer my
mate had junked 2 yrs ago and I rescued, took the carb off this
sonic cleaner, including all gaskets filters and diaphram, had
no replacements, cleaned them and blew out all the jets,
reasembled wouldn't go ,petrol down plug hole fired immediately
and then pulled fuel through, again goes like a train, SH><. no
one could get this thing to run at all thats why it was
discarded, the jets are so tiny in these toy carbs you really
need to sonic clean them and blow through,
my view is that the mixture is normally to oily, owners add a
little more to be on the safe side, only used infrequently and
the filters diaphrams jets all get gooed up, kind regards
er, could someone send another sheep this one has split!
