       2l Fan Belt Woes
   DIR By: megatoad

       ---------------------------------------------------------
t'other day I thought as it was a nice sunny day I would commute
in the 80". Then, as you do, at lunch time I had a peek under
the bonnet. Arghh I saw the fan belt was splitting.

So after a call to the nice man at Dingocroft, next day I had a
nice new fan belt arrive at work. Come 5:30, off I rush home in
       eager anticipation of some tinkering.
Well, as usuall, staright in without thinking, loosen off the
dynamo then off comes the fan belt, no problem.

Now to fit the new belt. Hmmmm. even with the dyname against the
block and the fan removed from the water pump there is no way I
can see to get the new belt on.
Now I had read a thread elswhere about the problem with
refitting 2l fan belts, but of course I could not be bothered to
go searching for a computer. So I had the bright idea of
       removing the Dyno pulley.
Once the nut was removed the pulley would not budge, so I gently
tried to prize it off with a screw driver and hammer.
       Arghh !!!!
       Then this of course happened:

Well trying to quickly source a C40 dynamo pulley quickly is not
that easy, fortunatly I was put in contact with a suberb
auto-electicians in Aylesbury. I had also been toying with
upgrading to an alternator at some stage, so while I was there I
bought a shiney new 45A alternator to which he fitted the only
pulley wide enough for an IOE fan belt that he could find.

What of course I also partly forgot about was that the new
alternator is fatter than the dynamo and made it even harder to
fit the belt. In the end I actually remover the alternator, fed
it into the belt, then attached it to the engine.
As for fitting the adjustor bracket, well just to get the bolt
into the alternator I had to pull the belt tight.

Now for the wiring, well fortunatly I am blessed with negative
earth wiring to start with so no re polarising the Starter motor
and all the other nasties. However the lad that rebuilt it a few
years ago, while rewiring appeared to only have reels of red
       wire!!
However they did number most of the cables, but they are still
buggers to trace. On the bright side I am blessed with no less
than 7 fused circuits in the 80" instead of just 1!
So plenty of interwebbing next to be 95% sure how to disconnect
       and bypass the voltage regulator.
This really requires disconnecting the wire to the "F" terminal
of the regulator and joining it to the feed wire to the
dashboard warning light. Disconnecting the "D" main power supply
from the alternator. Wiring a new Supply from the alternator
direct to the battery terminal on the starter switch.

  HTML http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/842/5g8mr.jpg[/img]
Then ignition on ... Warning light illuminated ... check.
Start engine ... Warning light goes out .. check.
Volt mater over battery terminals 14.3V ... check.
Blimey its 20 years since I converted my last dyno to alternator
       system.!
       Not that hard though.
Now, that fuse box needs to go, I hate the Bosch/Ceramic bullet
type fuses so I have a nice new 10 way blade fuse box to replace
it with when time is available.

Nice result, do you need to modify the adjusting bracket to save
strain on the bearings ? I would look at a longer belt, all
power transmission stockists should be able to sort you out.

Thought I would see how the current arrangement would go, that
or as you saymodify the bracket.
I would Ideally prefer a new longer belt, but am not sure where
to go to find one as being 19mm wide they are apparently hard to
       find.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I really dont
want to knacker tge water pump.
