poor brakes

Hi Guys, I have 1973 series 3 SWB safari, totally original, I
have re-done the brakes with new slaves, pipes and stainless
hoses, and while it passes MOT`s fine, the brakes do not inspire
confidence!
it still has the 10" drums and single leading shoe system, no
servo, and frankly I want to keep it as original as possible.
the brake shoes are as per when I purchased it, and they show no
signs of wear, but I do not know the make, I was wondering if it
may be good to go for a known good make, possibly a softer
lining?
all suggestions gratefully received

Without seeing the shoess it is hard to say, but for what they
cost I would definitely consider changing them.
Other than that just the usual. Check the adjusters are working
correctly and not overly worn, check the drums are ok (although
you probably did all this when you did all the work). There is
no shame in opting for the late S3 twin leading shoe servo set
up!
Better to have a Landy that doesn't go but stops than one that
goes but doesn't stop....

Thanks stuart, adjusters are OK (fixed standard rather than new
which I refused to fit due to crap quality)
drums are original but fine (vehicle only 49k from new)
do you recommend a good soft shoe?
mileage done each year is low, so wear rate not an issue.

I have Mintex lined ones that I got from Paddocks and they are
certainly doing the job for me.

^^^^ What he says "Mintex" every time. People buy and fit these
£80 kits that do all wheels etc. and are just throwing time and
money away. My series three with 11" brakes would stop
frighteningly well, unless it had been submerged in water then
it was crap.

I would agree, make sure your adjustors are set correctly, I
have just replaced all the shoes on the 80" with new ones and
the stopping is much better (the last ones were worn down by
mud) but you definaly need to strengthen the muscles in your
right leg if you still drive more modern vehicles daily like me.
While the TLS brakes are slightly better than the 10" they are
not that brilliant, especially in reverse as most of us
triallers will attest to!!

I have been having a nightmare with Mintex shoes for last eight
weeks wheels and drums have been off so many times.
Shoes are breaking up in centres especially on leading shoe have
sent complete set back to supplier and currently have my old
originals on front and a replacement set of Mintex on rear which
have also lost surface in centre on trailing shoes.
Have now bought a set of TRW shoes but waiting to see if the
Mintex eventually bed in.

I replaced everything in my 64 a few years back, and I have
never been satisfied with the performance. My last excursion, I
found myself on a steep rocky grade with my wife hanging on with
white knuckles...... We both decided it’s time to upgrade to the
Torrel disc brake conversion. I think it will be money well
spent.
