Gauges overreading

Hi chaps,
My fuel gauge and my temp gauge are both over reading by about
1/4, i.e. fuel gauge never shows less than 1/4 and temp gauge
sits just below red rather than in the middle.
I've checked the voltage stabiliser and its chucking out 9.75V,
so near enough to 10V and definitely not enough to throw them
out by that much.
The outputs from the gauges (green and black wire) which go onto
the senders is about 6.5V which seems sensible?
I'm inclined to think it is something with the wiring as it is
affecting both gauges - any other ideas or things I've missed?

Have they ever worker correctly...if yes have you changed any
thing lately...

You could try sticking a good earth scource on make sure that is
not the problem, easy check.

From memory, I think the gauges read high when the sender is
shorted out. They go low (no reading) when there's an open
circuit.
I would double check that you really are certain that the
voltage regulator/stabiliser on the back of the dash is okay
(I'd swap it for a new or known good one).
Do the gauges read high with the engine off (but the ignition
on, obviously)? If they only read high when the engine is
running, then it could be a fault with your alternator wiring
meaning the voltage supplied is too high.
The voltage regulator/stabiliser isn't really an advanced
semi-conductor device: It's a bimetallic strip with a bit of
resistor wire that heats up. all it does is try to ensure the
voltage supplied to the instruments is smooth over short
timescales. It can't ensure that the voltage isn't too high or
too low.
As Espacekiller said; also check your earths - particularly at
the battery if the fault only occurs with the engine running.
