Hi James,
It is a Samsung but it charges fine with other non standards
chargers, for example the one I keep in the camper.

What kind of charger is it? is it a USB charger?
There are different chargers capable of different current
supplies, this too is also governed by the usb cable you use,
some are incapable of charging smatphones as the guage of teh
wires within are too small.
Try looking for a good USB lead recommended for charging.
I use a 1amp double usb port charger, I think from Maplin.
Also, what gauge wire did you use to wire to the charger socket
itself, the larger the cable cross section the more current can
be supplied to the socket.

I too suspect that it is the charger at fault rather than the
socket.
Does that particular charger work if plugged in to a different
car?
Do you have a different charger that you could try plugging into
your Landy?

BlackBerry do a very good charger that is basically a plug that
goes into a fag lighter socket and gives you a USB socket you
can plug any lead into. £7-odd on eBay plus it's dual voltage
12v/24v. It's worked well for me in the car and 24v coaches.
