Diesel not starting
DIR By: ferretjuggler

I had a 2286 diesel in my old S2.
You could leave it for a year and it would fire up straight away
as long as the battery was still up.
Now the one I've got now will keep starting as long as I fire it
up every couple of days.
Leave it a week and it needs bleeding.
Not just at the pump.
I have to slack the pipes at the injectors and bleed it right
through.
I'm just wondering if my pump has succumbed to the dread 7% bio
diesel that our wonderful masters have decided to force on us?
Apparently the CAV pumps have natural rubber seals in there
somewhere and the bio diesel rots them.
Any chance that I'm on the right track or completely barking up
the wrong tree?

Sound like an air leak letting the fuel to drain back, I don't
know much about cav pumps but if there's a leak from a failed
seal fuel will get out as well as air getting in, is there any
sign of wetness from fuel around the pump body? If you don't
have one a fuel primer pump (rubber bulb type) fitted in the
fuel line near the tank might stop the fuel draining back, they
have one way valves in them.

Have you replaced the fuel filter at all, and snagged one of the
3 seals?

No sign of diesel leaking out anywhere.
It was doing this long before I last changed the filter.
I'm gonna change it anyway cheapo"allmakes" jobby.
Yeah, looking at the pipework there could easily be an air
leak.
Looks like it was put together by a Chimp in a hurry.
Something else to add to my "to do list"

It could be as simple as a weak hose clip.

Someone has used the clear nylon reinforced fuel tubing with
jubilee clips that just don't look happy.
I'm no great fan of either, but IIRC the OE spec black nylon
pipe isn't cheap.
I'll do what I can with it for now.
Hopefully I'll find some OE spec pipe in the near future

The clear fuel line is alright, it's what we use in the
generator industry in certain applications over the opaque black
plastic as you can see problems and confirm you have fuel to the
pump etc. The trouble is the jubilee clip - I had them on mine
and broke down outside the damn MOT station, couldn't get
started again at all. Turned out to be a faulty clip that chose
that moment, ie it timed things perfectly, to fail and cost me
my MOT slot.
I also had a pukka non return valve on the feed pipe at one
point, but for some reason I'd bleed it all up, and the engine
would start and run beautifully - for about five minutes and
then cough to a stop. Turned out the NRV was too strong or
something. When operated by hand the lift pump could draw fuel,
but when running it couldn't get fuel past the NRV and after
what was already in the filter etc was used it would stop.
My advise would be to check everything, in a very logical manner
and one thing at a time. Don't replace stuff without a better
reason than you aren't keen or it looks suspect, replace stuff
one at a time because you have found a particular fault.
Otherwise you can just chase yourself up your own arsehole.

Also - might help to put your location in your profile. Someone
could possibly pop by and give a helping hand. I know I could
possibly pop over if you were close to me (Middleton,
Manchester) :lightblb:

Location Added ( Telford )
TBH I'm quite pleased that the concensus of opinion is pointing
towards bad plumbing., not the pump.
Yes it's a PITA but a cheap fix.

May I point you in the direction of www.ssldieselparts.co.uk
........
You'll find that they stock just what you need in that
department and a lot more as well.......the only thing that I
have been stumped by is getting the leak off pipe size just
right, so normally use a softer clear pipe that heats and pushes
onto the injector unions much easier.
Its unbelievable , they are from South Uist, but their postage
service is far better than mainland and if ( a big if) they are
out of stock of an ordered item they will sent part orders
pronto and then sent back orders to follow, without any further
postage costs to you.
Can't recommend them enough; why they don't advertise in the
landy mags I don't know?!
Check out their list of filter housings and glass sediment bowls
etc etc --- FTW!
Edit: I renewed all the fuel plumbing on my 2.5n/a ( bar the
small leak off pipes) with stuff from them, cost feck all
really. Remember though, if you are going to use compression
fittings to use the brass inserts ( which they stock)
