Registration retention?

I've been told about a series 2a project with a nice number
plate. It's been off the road since 1979, would I be able to
keep the plate (it's my initials)?
Thanks Mud

So long as there is a v5 (or you can get one) & the vehicle is
tested you should be able to transfer the plate if you wish too
so long as it doesn't make the vehicle look newer than it is.
The less scrupulous of folk out there would just put them on
their existing vehicle and retesting it with its new identity
but that of course is highly illegal.......
There is some useful info on the dvla website, you can ring them
so long as you have a week or two spare to wait for them to
answer and then actually find someone who has a vague idea of
what he/she is talking about :rolleye0012: :rolleye0012:

Some age related plates are not transferable (usually when the
plates have been allocated to a vehicle which has lost it's
original number for whatever reason). Check the V5 to see if it
says "not transferable" adjacent to the registration number.

When you search on DVLA for the registration number does it
recognise it? If so you're home and dry, although depending on
certain things it may be non-transferrable as James says. If the
DVLA don't recognise it then things get somewhat more involved
to say the least. Next step is to search the MID, if it's
showing as insured it will tell you what vehicle it's assigned
to so a plate rape victim. Unlikely as far back as '79 but
certainly not impossible.

Hi guys, thanks for the advice. Yes the dvla recognise it and
the details are shown so I guess its worth a punt.
Thanks Mud
