Coach paint

Ay up,
When painting over galv bits, how important it the primer, and
what would you folks use?
Never had to do anything other than touch up before but I have a
galved front panel to fit.
I had though of giving it a good coat of hammerite black before
flatting off and a couple of coats of the nice good quality
bronze green modern coach paint I have. Surely that should be
ok...?
Or do I need to use a proper primer?

To get a good adhesion use mordent wash this will allow the
primer to stick to the galve it goes Black when applied I used
hammerite and was told it did not need a primer but it's now
just peeling off and I used etch primer.

Thanks HD do you mean you used mordent wash under hammerite
under a top coat?

mordent wash directly onto the galv surface. Prime as normal
when it has turned black and dried. As for paint, I have used
Tractol enamel for twenty plus years. I have used celly and two
pack over the years, but nowt as easy or cheap as Tractol. Smith
& Allan in Darlington sell it. Its about £16 a litre (which
should be enough for a swb). Brush or spray application. I have
had excellent results applying with a foam mini roller, touching
up the bits a roller cant get to with a good quality brush. Thin
and or clean up with cheap celly thinners (asbout £8 a gallon).
Leave the Hammerite for your chassis.... :toothless:

Has acid content I believe to etch the surface and get good
cohesion , I used a twin pack version on my bulkhead and front
panel. Unfortunately as did not use the Mordant solution there
is places where paint has lifted.

1. Mordent wash.
2. Etch-primer.
3. Top-coat of choice.

Thanks folks that has cleared it up for me.
As Tony says I think I will be leaving the hammerite for the
chassis...
Appreciate the advice!

there is also the Hammerite Special Metals Primer that i recall
using in the past - water based and pink in colour - designed
for aluminiium and galv i think. not sure how effective it is,
but i dont recall any bits peeling off where i used it on
aluminium.

I seem to recall in the not distant past, someone told me that
hammerite was porous so when painted onto metal, the rust would
still come through. Not sure how true his is but I normally
steer clear of the stuff!

Peeling off big style from my galv chassis. Big flakes. 3 years
after painting. Might as well have just slapped the top coat on
without it.
