Electrical issues (might have fuct up)

Well Aryette (my '83 Series 3 88") now has some brakes
However we (my Dad & me) had to arc weld one of the adjusters to
stop it spinning.
Naturally we completely disconnected the battery (both
terminals)
Problem is now when I put the brakes on the sidelights come on.
And when I turn the sidelights on the brakelights come on as
well. Also when I touch the brakes with the sidelights on the
charge light comes on (even if the keys aren't in the ignition).
:/
Going to have a look tomorrow to see what, but any obvious
things to check first? Am guessing a short, but where to aim
first?
(All the electrics were working before, I checked them)

"usually" it's a poor earth that produces these results, might i
suggest turning on your sidelights and then holding the
footbrake on...
this often gives you the reverse effect of turning your lights
off or alternatively dimming them

As above, sounds like an earth fault. Probably one of the main
connections.
You can test be creating a temporary earth body to battery earth
with a jump lead

+1 on the earth issue; have experienced precisely this myself
(albeit on something unmentionably sprung).
Good fix with the arc welder though :thumbs:. Get some
up-to-date pics of Aryette in Memberz Motorz PDQ.

What they say re poor earths, sometimes just removing the bulbs
and cleaning them works. You say it is a series three, clean the
4 fuses on the steering column I have had strange charge
light/indicator light glowing issues cured by cleaning the
fuses.

Same as others regarding poor earth Make sure all bulb holders
are screwed in tight I have had it were a screw just needed a
further half turn to connect to earth

+another on poor earth. The easiest way to prove it is run a
wire from the negative terminal on the battery to a negative
wire from the rear lights and see if that cures it. BTW for
future reference I'd suggest disconnecting the battery and
pulling the plug out of the back of the alternator before
welding. It's unlikely, but you may have cooked something in the
alternator.

if its not an earth fault, then check the bulbs themselves as i
once had strange brake light/sidelight issue and it turned out
to be a dodgy tail-light bulb that had shorted out internally,
so replacing the bulb cured the problem.

This makes NO sense, been looking at it tonight, got the dash
stripped out because I noticed something.
It's not just teh charge light that comes on, its the entire
ignition (found this out by pressing the brake pedal while had
the indicator down)
This only happens when teh brown wire on the back of the lights
switch is connected, disconnect that & it doesn't happen.
Seriously confused now though, and cannot find the haynes book
of lies for teh diesel S3 to check teh wiring diagram *help*
And cannot see where the brown wire vanishes to as it goes into
the wrapped bundle under the dash.

Remove the tail light bulbs and see if this cures it. Its
possible that a faulty bulb, or the wrong bulb (A single
filament bulb) could cause this. If you connect the brake light
and tail light wires together (by bridging the two pins in the
bulb holder with the single contact on the back of a single
filament bulb) then the tail light circuit can feed all the
stuff that should be ignition controlled and vice versa. You
may have had this problem before your welding episode, but just
have never noticed it. If its not the bulb then it could still
be a fault in the tail light wiring causing the same thing.
I had this on a motorbike years ago. The previous owner had
fitted the wrong bulb into the tail light. Every time I pressed
the brake the headlight came on. Somewhat dangerous at
junctions as people think you are flashing them to come out!!!
