Re: Sam's Gearbox Overhaul

Of the three gearbox casings I have - all S2 - none of them has
the two holes to enable me to drift out the bearing race. That
doesn't mean to say that I couldn't drill a couple of holes
myself but I have been told that a length of wood turned to be a
tight fit into the race and with the race filled with grease and
a hefty whack on the piece of wood, the thing just pops out.

If you heat the casing around it it should pop out. The two
holes must have just been added for the s3 then

clean and degrease the area making sure there is no residue
inside the case or around the outer bearing race.
Turn the gearbox on its end so the outer race can fall out.
Simply heat the end of the gearbox around the bearing area and
wait till you here the bearing fall to the ground. a gentle tap
to cause a vibration might be needed but to date I have always
found the bearing literaly falls out after the case has been
heated with a simpe gas blowlamp from a DIY store.
Do not be tempted to ram things in etc as you run the risk of
causing burrs etc. Simply up end it and heat it

I am just wondering where you managed to source the lay shaft
and 1st 2nd and 3rd gear from, have a s3 box in bits at the
moment that has been stored with water in it. Teeth have little
wear but have suffered rust pitting a few of them. I am in New
Zealand so hope there is somewhere willing to send overseas?
