Clutch plate aligning tips?

Heya all
Today I collected a NOS borg & beck clutch plate for a S2 6cyl,
which is going into Aryette.
However I Always struggle to align the clutch properly.
Anybody got any tips or suggestions for this? :girly:

i use the end of a main shaft i cut off years ago :thumbs:

If you don't have a spare gearbox to cut the mainshaft from, as
above then one of the multi purpose alignment tools work well

Look very carefully at the centre (driven) plate before fitting.
Hopefully, it states "Flywheel Side/Schwungradseite" or
"Getriebeseite (Gearbox side). I know that's German, but you'd
be surprised where these things are made. If you get it wrong,
you get clutch drag and the centre boss of the plate fouls the
flywheel bolts, eventually wearing the heads off, with
disastrous results.

I turned one on my lathe, in the past I have got way with
winding tape on to a bit of tube to get the sizes.
Where are you?

Sometimes you can get lucky and find a socket that will work...

Go down the lazy professional route and buy a clutch alignment
kit for £10 to £15.
You could always sell it on afterwards, or keep it in the
tool-kit as a good investment.
In my opinion, fairly inexpensive bits of kit like this are
worth every penny for the amount of hassle/stripped knuckles
they save.

I am under the impression that you are putting a new gearbox in
to replace a ruined one? If yes, that leads you back towards
saving the main shaft and using that. If not, I agree with
Wooden. I have used the tape wrapped socket successfully a few
times but in addition to the proper tool being easier to get
right, I have a theory that a professional approach helps to
create a state of mind resulting in a professional job.

May I ask why the 6cyl clutch plate? Is it necessary in order to
couple the box to a later diesel or have you just chosen it for
strength?

2a box onto a S3. 3 dowel 9½ flywheel........
