       Gearbox stuck in reverse!!!!!!!

       Hi enlightened wielders of spanners.
I seem to have gained a problem on my series 3. I was using my
Landy on a treasure hunt on Sunday morning, we stopped for a bit
of lunch :). Then I got back in it after said refreshment,
started it up, put it in reverse and this is where the problems
started. It made a horrible racket while going backwards :WTF.
I stopped the truck and tried to get it out of reverse :2mo5pow:
not a chance. It's jammed solid, so after a Dmmy spit moment
(and a quick call to the wife for a replacement vehicle) we
abandoned the truck in the car park and carried on in an
inferior model vehicle (which also ended up recovering the Landy
later Sunday night, thank god it was dark)
Anyway after all that, this is the question. Any idea what's
gone wrong? I'm thinking selectors, or is it going to be a box
       out job :2mo5pow:
Any and all (sensible) advice greatly received

could be a detent ball popped out or if you lift the inspection
cover on top you will see if its the selector forks are ok

Does the gear stick feel very loose?
It is possible for the end of gearstick to come out of the
reverse selector external of the box if the small screw that
holds the ball of the gear stick has worn or come loose.
Also the ball on the end of the stick has been known to come
       off.

       Hi guys.
The gear stick is absolutely solid. There is no play in there at
all. I only stopped pulling on it as I thought I was going to
break it off (wouldn't be the first time I've snapped one).
I'll get it in the workshop on Saturday to have a look properly.

The bush in the reverse idler could have come loose and wedged
       it in gear??

Could the mainshaft nut being loose cause this? I've heard it
can lock it in a certain gear (cant remember which) but can it
       happen in reverse?

       Hi,
My first post so I hope its of use.
I've had this happen to me twice. Both times it was the gearbox
mainshaft nut in the transfer case, the one that holds the
output gear on. this had come loose and when in reverse it had
unwound and locked solid on the support bearing housing. Had to
slacken off the six nuts to get the gearbox into neutral and
then beat the nut tight with a hammer and punch through the top
cover. It happened again a couple of years later cos I hadn't go
round to replacing the tab washer.
