Petrol engine running cold.

Good evening.
I have a 5 bearing 2286 petrol. Zenith carb and electronic
ignition. It runs well and the timing is as advanced as
possible.
I run a Kenlowe fan.
For most of the year I run with a radiator muff and the temp
gauge sits bang in the middle. Now the muff is off it only comes
up to a quarter. I have tried two good thermostats to no avail.
Is there any way I get the temperature up a bit? Maybe block the
bypass hose?

I have the same engine running a webber carb. It runs just
bellow half on the temp guage normally.
Iv'e never heard of anyone saying that engine was running too
cold at this time of year.

Later engines had a blanking plate in the thermostat housing to
direct the flow, maybe a previous owner has left it out. What
temp. stat. are you using ? Try an 82 degree "Winter" stat.

When the gauge is reading 1/4, do you get heat out of the
interior heater? If you do, then I would suspect the gauge is
faulty and the engine is actually fine.

I am using a Normal thermostat at the moment, an NOS Unipart
one. This worked in a saucepan of water. Before I had an 82
degree one that also worked in a saucepan.
If I leave it ticking over it will eventually reach mid point on
the gauge, and the Kenlowe kicks in. If I earth the gauge it
goes to the Hot.
The heater is noticeably cooler.
I know I could put the muff back on, but I am just wondering why
it is running so cool.
Where would the blanking plate fit?

The fan is automatic and kicks in if I let it get it warm. It is
working fine.
I know it it isn't much to complain about but the thing runs
better when it is hot, and I like to see the gauge where it
should be...

The blanking plate is in the stat housing and has a hole about
10 mm diameter. You my find it in the part list.

Has it got the correct stat with a shulder on it and has it got
the big rubber O ring in the stat housing....if neither of
these...coolant will simple get past the stat and the engine
will take much longer to warm fully,
If everything is working as it should...a rad blind should not
help much in speeding up the warm up time....
