I am restoring a 109 dormobile. Came from a friend who wants
the engine and box back. I also have an 87 debender to scrap
with good engine and box and I want to fit the engine/box from
that. I have joined to find details of how to do this

       Welcome along PRB...

First starting point would be to measure the gearbox lengths and
the positions of the outputs, I am not sure if you will need to
have the propshafts modified and the gearbox mountings changed
       as well.

Thanks, Ive got the body off the 109, need to get the debender
to bits next then i can try the whole thing out. Im thinking of
       the ashcroft conversion to
keep the transfer box, props, handbrake etc.( my mate said he
wanted the gearbox back, didn't say anything about the transfer
box!) I've looked into converting to cvs and going permanent
four wheel drive with the defender lt230 but cant find a source
       of the correct half shafts.
incidentally i have a nice safari roof (tropical) I need a
standard roof to fit the dormobile roof to and will swap if
anyone has a good one plus a dozen bottles of Abbot.

Converting to Debender 4wd will bring you a whole world of pain
in terms of making it work, I'm afraid. You'd have to
substantially alter the floorpan and transmission tunnel to go
from the red/yellow levers to a difflock lever, and as you've
said already there will be the front axle problem (uj's dont
like permanent 4wd running, but the halfshafts and CV swivels
from a debender are not a straight swap).
It can be done if you really put your mind to it - Scrapheap
Challenge's "Chaos Crew" built a lovely 109 with debender hubs
on leafer axles - to do this, they had to splice the 2 types of
halfshafts by dowel-jointing them together, then welding the
joint as it span in a lathe. It was a fantastic bit of
engineering, but a nightmare of a job. In your case, you would
also have to cut and splice propshafts if the transfer box
       dimensions are different.
By far your best bet is, as said, to use an Ashcroft kit to mate
the 'fender gearbox to your existing transfer case. Or, an
alternative would be to sell or swap the big gay big gay boingy
bits for a nice pukka Series engine and box - depending on how
many miles you want to cover and at what speed and economy

If you don't use the Ashcroft kit then you will need to find a
pair of 3.54:1 diffs - Salisbury for the rear, which is a little
more involved to swap (or a SII LWB rear axle instead) - as the
debender xfer ratio is lower than the Series one.
Or, if you are really lucky, find a set of 1.003:1 gears for the
LT230 and stick those in instead of swapping the diffs. That
would give you Series-like high ratio for roadwork, and a nice
low set of ratios for the rest.

The Ashcroft kit involves moving the engine forward 4" or so.

My Blue Dormobile has disco tdi, plus Debender turbo and
fanimolds and lt77 gearbox, running permanent 4wd. A great
       combination.
Check out this months CLassic Land rover magazine.
There are issues fitting the Debender engine as the timing case
is different so it fouls (I believe) the front engine mount.
Mine is fitted to the original 6 pot engine mounts. As a result,
the gear lever is in the right place to be able to use a
Debender transmission tunnel and no scalloping of cross members
was required. However, there was some fabrication needed on the
bottom of the main chassis rails to accomodate the removable
       gearbox cross member.
Where are you? lwb roofs are not easy things to move about!
You dont need a salisbury either - all three of mine have got
standard axles but with 3.54 diffs
