The overdrive and transfer on my S111 88 are vented with brass
tubes that feed to a plastic tube that lubricates the chassis
and rear tub floor :smile1 The PO said it was to balance the
pressures.

Thanks everyone,
I'll tell the other chap I was wrong after all, and that
actually appears to be shagged seals on my o/d that are letting
it top itself up from the T-box. Ah well, something else to add
to the list of things to rebuild in the grand overhaul.....

Pretty difficult for the overdrive to top itself up from the
transfer case as it is above the transfer case oil level and
will only see oil splash from drive train.
So if your overdrive level is staying correct it is likely your
transfer case is leaking because if your overdrive seals where
shot its oil would leak into transfer case.

I suspect the main reason the overdrive loses little or no oil
is because it does not have an underslung gash tin cover plate
like the transfer box. ::)
Brown's PO apparently believed the fairy overdrive was
lubricated from the transfer box. Old one spectacularly
kerknackerd. :2mo5pow:
Just refitted old trans inc new O/D and because of its very
small oil capacity I will change twice as often as recommended,
just to be safe.

The LT95 overdrive (Also made by Fariey) does share its oil with
the transferbox. They don't have a dipstick so when you fit
them your ment to pore oil in the top plate till the transferbox
level plug overflows, then in theory they'll stay happy if you
keep the transferbox maintained. Given their higher load I can
see it being an advantage over the tiny closed system in normal
faries as it would give more oil to disapate heat into - both
those resions are why normal faries die (lack of maintinance and
overheating). Probubly worth stating here while we are on the
subject that although the LT95 is often described as having a
combined main box and transferbox its just like a series box
having seperate oil for each - I'm resionably sure the
'combined' myth was how a mate of mines "recently serviced" LT95
was found to have no oil in the transferbox which explained why
it shat its intermedate shaft thrust washers, as the bits of
them were purple!
If you really want to know how oil can get to the top of the
transferbox take a top plate off, transferbox in neutral, stick
the main box in 4th gear and give it a rev - quite a lot of oil
will come out! Trying to hold that back is why the crappy thin
top plate over the output shaft of a S3 TB often leaks, early
ones with the fillter plug in were thick enough to stay flat so
don't leak.

The fairy of for an lt95 does have a !sans of scavenging
splashed oil from the t/b via a couple of scoops. Not aware of
anything for the standard series one though.
