2nd issue - steering that can only be described as
'entertaining'

It's me again..
Apart from the lack of power on hills, there is one other issue
I could really do to sort out asap. The steering is all over the
place.
When I stripped it down I kept the TRE's all in the same place
as previously, the rods have all been cleaned up and repainted
but not fiddled with, so in theory they're all refitted and set
as was with no change. I rebuilt both swivels with new bearings
and seals before refitting. Now from memory I set them up
correctly using the method in the book (thanks to Dave for the
loan of the spring balance) but now I've had it on the drive
there is clearly something wrong. I am constantly having to
correct the steering and it doesn't self centre. If I hit a
small bump it jumps and has to be corrected then I have to
correct the correction etc etc.
I was going to check the pre load again on the swivels but a
concerted effort last weekend failed to locate Dave's spring
balance, I'll get one of my own when I have chance, but I'm just
wondering if there is anything else that could be wrong, given
that I set it up correctly beforehand (and I quadruple checked
at the time)

First simple check would be the adjuster on the steering box. If
this is backed off the play in the wheel would certainly
exacerbate these problems, although I'm not sure if it could
cause them.

That definitely sounds like something stiff to me (oooerr!)
Patrick's SWB was like that when we got it - wouldn't self
centre and it felt like you were driving long zig zags down the
road, as you say, constantly having to correct the steering.
His turned out to be a stiff swivel - once I disconnected the
TREs I measured it at over 25lbs with the seal still fitted. The
other side was around 14lbs, again with seal fitted.
I shimmed out the stiff one to around 14lbs and it transformed
it :smilewide:

Mine wouldn't self centre, turned out the steering relay was
dry.

Same here...relay was hard to turn and not even when
turning...no self centring...fine now I have fitted a new one.

So tonight I first adjusted the steering box, the square
adjuster was a fair way out. I screwed it in and then backed it
off a tad. I then had a look at the relay and was relieved to
see a grease nipple in the top! So I topped that up too. After a
test drive (which was terrifying but better) I adjusted the box
a again and it was a lot better. It won't self centre and is a
bit vague still but it's not wandering all over like it was.
It's driveable at least.

I buggered about with mine for ages. I got hold of two
dial-gauges on magnetic mounts and spent forever going back and
forth sorting out where the play was coming from. You're aiming
for 1" at the the rim outer. In my case I had one of those
Heystee Gayness PAS ram kits, and whilst it's great, its big
issue is its needs steering like it left the factory or you get
what you were getting with power assistance to aid your wander.
Frightening.
Start from the bottom and work up, not the other way round. I
had to buy a reaplcement steering box, and the first one I got
sent was made of cheese.

What do the swivel balls look like? Clean or pitted? Mine were
worn quite badly and as a result wouldnt move smoothly in the
swivel housing so was very notchy

I still think you need to re check the swivels to get the
correct pull but........... have you checked that the steering
box and its bracketry is tight ?
They can be loose then you think the Devil is steering the plot.

Sorry for not reporting back - see my other post in the general
section for all the explanation required..
For temporary reasons beyond my control I am unable to carry out
any work on the old boy for the time being. However I will be
checking all the above mentioned things just as soon as I
recapture some normality. In the meantime I loosened the
adjuster on the box slightly and it isn't quite so ridiculously
dangerous to drive but you can't relax at all and there is a lot
of play in the wheel. None of the TRE's are worn out that I can
tell but they aren't new either. The relay is an unknown as it
hasn't been touched but nothing has presented itself in that
area as being suspect as such.
The first thing I will do is check the swivels again when I get
the chance. By the book you check them with the seals off but
I'd prefer to check them with the seals on if anyone knows what
the figure should be? (or even is it wise?)
