Cheap motoring - comparison

Not that many here will need to be told this, but I thought I'd
say it anyway.
Recently, EVERYTHING ran out on my "cheap,
genuine-one-owner-from-new-before-me, low mileage Euro-box
runabout" Fiat Punto diesel. First the MOT, that's £30.00, and
it failed miserably. The thing was rotton underneath, £170 later
and it got through. Another £300 for cheapo insurance, and then
another £200 odd for the damn tax.
The Land Rover is 51 this year and has cost - £45 for the MOT
which it sailed through, and fully comp fully loaded insurance
with breakdown and legal cover cost £149. Free tax and I'm on
the road. Of course time will tell if my current 'no power'
issue ends up being a few quid for a lift pump or £lots for an
engine rebuild, but that's not the point...

Cash you've saved from tax over the years will pay for the
rebuild :) Own it for 10 years and youve saved over 2 grand in
tax alone! Plus parts are pretty cheap for a classic motor at
the minute compared to a modern car and any problems dont need a
computer plugging in to tell you whats wrong ;D

Mines got a small leak so I've been researching fixing it.....
Asked the Missus what she thought the parts might cost. "£100
?" came the reply. Many brownie points earned when I said
"£1.45p".
( NOS crank oil seal, ex MOD stock, PA Blanchards)

Not always the case though when you factor in the time taken do
do things (and time does have a price). I reckon that it would
take longer to replace the springs, dampers and brake friction
items (and get them properly set and adjusted as per the book)
on my late 109" than it would on my late 108".

I know I can swap a pair of springs and dampers on a Land Rover
(taking into account rusted fixings etc) in a few hours, easily.
Hell, I can get the engine out in less than two, on my own. I
had a Mondeo estate a while back and needed to replace one
(horrible boingy) spring on the front. Eight sodding hours
:haha:. It should be a straightforward job but Ford made it as
difficult as possible. You have to do things like lower the sub
frame by 25mm and remove alsorts of gubins that have no right to
be involved, and none of this information is in the hand book I
had. I spent two hours doing it the way I was taught (ie, THE
way for a Mcpherson strut) only for it to foul by about 6mm and
totally refuse to be removed, and then I had to put it all back
together and do the other things before I could get it out. You
can't even replace the belt without dropping the damn engine,
and don't even mention replacing head lamp bulbs!
Yes time has value, but it's my time that is involved here, I
can work on my Land Rover in the evenings and weekends when I
don't have a shoot and it's enjoyable to work on a Land Rover.
Old Land Rovers - they're the future.
